Does anyone here have a science-related career?
I'm in grad school for my PhD in neuroscience, but I really don't think I want to stay in academia after I get my degree. It's scary not knowing what kind of career options I have. So, does anyone have any jobs in science they can tell me about?

I work in Alzheimer's research. We have a clinical sight and a basic science lab. Most of those that work there (with the exceptions of the techs) are Ph.Ds in bio, chem, etc. and neuroscience would obviously fit right in. I would think you would be able to get into any hospital that is big on research-LIJ, NSUH, Mt. Sinai, Montefiore (sp?), etc.

Can you get into Autism research? I don't know much about neuroscience but i do know first hand about the autism epidemic and there isn't enough people out there in the field!

I am a formulations chemist currently working on high end anti-aging products. I am looking to get into pharmaceutical formulations now. My degree is in biochemistry.
Cancer research always interested me.

My big thing is that I don't think I want a tenure-track job. But the problem with being a research scientist a lot of times is that it's soft money and not guaranteed. Are there any scientist jobs that are just on salary?

I work in the Drug Safety department of a biotech company. Would you be interested in the pharmaceuticial/biotech industry?

Re: Does anyone here have a science-related career?
I have a PhD in Microbiology. I did a 2 year fellowship in clinical micro. My first job was technical director of a molecular pathology lab, now I am asst. director of clinical micro at a different hospital.
The clinical route is totally different than academic in many ways, and you still have the option of doing research (clinical based). There's options in clinical chemistry, molecular genetics, pathology, micro, and other area for PhDs. The work is lab-based - no patient contact!
Because of my 2 year fellowship, I have a stable job, my salary is hospital based, and it is WAY higher that it would be if I stayed in academics. I also get to see the effects of the results I help generate on patient lives almost instantaneously, which is very rewarding.

My degree is Biotech and I was a head chemist for a Environmental Company. I left though to be a SAHM.
Unfortunately, the job market for science by me stinks. When I go back to work in this area, I will try getting in with either pharmaceutical or cancer research. Or I just may change career paths completely.

Our scientists are salary based. They apply for grants but whether they get it or not they still get there salary. Our Ph.Ds are paid (I believe) in the 70/80ish range depending on experience. Not great but certainly not too bad (compared to our psychologists and academics!)

Yes! I was thinking something about editing. What does that entail? I mean what is your day to day work like?

Re: Does anyone here have a science-related career?
Pharmaceuticals is an option, but I guess I should say that I'm mainly studying the animal behavior side of neuroscience. So I'm going to come out knowing a lot about birdsong learning and the avian brain. I wanted to get started on a biochemistry project this year for my thesis, but then I had to switch labs and I decided to go into a purely behavior lab so I can get my degree faster. I'll be in my 5th year this year, so I figured this was the smartest thing to do. But I am interested in some aspects of biochemistry, liek synaptic proteins and plasticity. But anyways, I can't get a job in biochemistry not knowing any biochemistry, right? Or are they willing to teach people as they go along? Is a general PhD in Neuroscience enough?
