Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

I went there on a business trip last year. . .does that help?

Most of my experience involved the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & the mall across the street (loved the Liz Calirborn store!), but everyone I met there & in the city was very friendly.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

Well, we're looking into moving there. My husband can get transferred there if he wants, and we're kind of at the point where we're seriously considering it. We looked at brand new houses online that were going for $150K, and I'm just not sure I can pass that up. He'd have his same salary and benefits, and I could go back to school fulltime to finish my masters. We're thinking of flying down there in the next few weeks and checking it out. So, any information about the area would help us.
I like that it seems like a thriving, booming city. But again, we haven't been there yet. So, really, is it as nice as it looks in all the pictures?
He has friends who transferred from work and love it. I can't bare the thought of leaving my family, but I also can't bare the thought of both of us working day in and day out and having little to nothing to show for it if we stay hereChat Icon

We have friends that live there and we have visited twice. They really love it!! (neither of them are form there originally). It seems like a really up and coming city with lots of cute areas with restaurants, bars and boutiques.

All of our other friends who have visted them for longer really like it and have had a great time!

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

When we went it was for the CMA Fest, which is the annual massive country music event. So the place was hoppin'!!! Tens of thousands flight and drive in for it.
We had a blast. We even drove around different areas of the city. Nice place.

Ooh- That's exciting!

I remember thinking that it would be a nice place to live, as the shuttle bus drove throught the neighborhoods on the way from the airport to the hotel.

The downtown are of the city seemed small, but I was just there one night for dinner & I didn't explore too much b/c I was alone.

It wasn't as "country" as I expected.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

Thanks, everyone. It's not a definite, but the more we think about it, the more it really makes sense. I don't think we'd stay there forever, but I really think it would be the right move for the next five years or so. This way I can finish my masters, finish having children and stay home with them, and all the while own a really nice house. We have a lot of things to consider, but this weekend we went away and it was the first time we both really said, "What are we staying on Long Island for?" We love my family more than anything and we would miss them so incredibly much, but with a nice big house and my parents having flexible schedules, we could have them down there whenever they wanted.
I'm just sick of making a decent salary and still worrying so much about money all the time. What for? What kind of life is that? I'm a teacher, so I can really work anywhere, and the fact that he can just transfer with his same salary is a huge factor. We wouldn't move until the end of this upcoming school year, so a year from now, but we really need to start thinking about this now. It's so sad, yet so exciting at the same time.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

I've driven through it twice on the way to and from moving to LA. It's nice and definitely NOT a regular country town. Thriving music there, which I know is RIGHT up your alley (and not ALL country)

What I would say is if you are a "NY" personality (fast-paced, always on the go)it's a big adjustment you should be aware of. I moved to LA and they are like 2-3 steps behind the "pace" and my friend who had moved from Tennesee said THAT was a faster pace than she was accustomed to growing up...It personally drove me crazy, but again, I enjoy the fast pace. But there are many people that welcome and love the change of pace. And if that's what works for you than absolutely GO for it. I have thought about it more than twice, I just don't think I can make the jump...GOOD LUCK...and show pics to make us all jealousChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

I just got back from a wedding there, and my brother went to college there several years ago. It's got a fairly small city feel, and there are some beautiful suburbs, and Peabody College of Vanderbilt University has excellent masters programs in education. I'd recommend going there to visit before you decide anything, and staying for maybe a week or so. There's a very different feel to the area when compared with NY, but it's a nice place. Making this type of decision is never easy, no matter which choice you end up making - good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

Rachel,

That does sound like a great opportunity for you and your family. We wiil certainly be sad that you are leaving LI although I'm sure you will never leave LIF. I am sure leaving your family here would be hard but you must do what is BEST for YOUR family and like you said they can come stay with you. The fact that JT can transfer with the same salery & benefits is great.

I went on vacation to Nashville years ago and LOVED IT. We staying at Opyland Hotel & in the downtown area. We also drove over to Pidgeon Forge. Someday I want to go back. Nashville is beautiful in the city and I am sure life just outside of the city would be heavenly.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

I went there on business and had a great time. We were there for 3 days and it was during the Nashville Country Music festival so it was insane. We stayed at the Gaylord Opryland and that hotel alone is like it's own town so we really didnt venture out too much into Nashville.

I enjoyed it and would definately go back to visit

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

I lived in Murfreesboro , TN for about 3 months for work. It was about 30 minutes outside of Nashville. I really liked Franklin - its beautiful there.

Its definitely different there and not for me, but it seems like it would be a great place to raise kids if a great opportunity came your way.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Nashville, TN?

Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it. We're not going to rush into this decision. We want to go down there and spend some time looking around and really see if we can picture ourselves living there. We haven't told my family yet that we are thinking about this because we don't want their opinions to skew our decision.
We also don't want to rush because we want to make sure that we're making the decision for the right reasons. We've been looking for a house up here and it just depresses us that there's nothing nice in our price range. I also am getting sick of living on LI, in general. I feel like I'm becoming claustrophobic because there's just so much development everywhere you look. We're in the very beginning stages of trying to figure out what to do, so all of your input has been wonderfulChat Icon
