What exactly is so bad about it? My only complaint is that it is heavy- even without a child in it!

The Safeseat together with almost every other carseat on the market "failed" a crash test performed by Consumer Reports. Snugride with EPS was one of only two that passed. It was originally reported that the crash test was done at 35 MPH and that the various carseats did everything from flying off the base to shaking so violently that they didn't protect the child. It was later discovered that the crash tests were done at a higher speed than reported (like 60 MPH).
Personally, if the Snugride stays put at normal everyday highway speed, and the Safeseat does not, why bother with the Safeseat, even if it tests fine at the lower speed???

Re: Does anyone know how the Graco Safeseat compares to the Snugride as far as safety is concerned??
I had the safe seat down on my registry and quickly changed it to the snug ride. After reading baby bargains I made this choice due to the poor safety rating.
The reason why I picked the safe seat (funny its called that) was because it can hold a baby up to I foreget how many pounds but you can get the most use out of it.
From what I remember the snug ride and the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio were the two highly recommend car seats from the baby bargains book.

I read that, but think about it, on Long Island the speed limit might be 55 MPH, but if you actually try going that slow you'll get run off the road. To keep up with the lunatics on the road you have to drive over 65 MPH - and Consumer Reports tested the car seats at that kind of high speed and only two passed the test (even if they did mistakenly say the test was done at 35 MPH).
Frankly, since someone actually tested the car seats at high speeds, I'll stick with the one that passed - the Snugride, over the Safeseat any day.

I agree! Does ANYONE drive 35mph these days? Most places the speed limit is 45-55, in MI it's 70 on the highways, so I don't know why they would crash test them only at 35mph. I'm glad Consumer Reports did it at 65.

It is, and even though they say you can use it from birth on, I couldn't imagine not having my infant seat.

Based on this thread I changed my carseat on my registry to the Graco Devon from the Graco Heirloom safeseat. FYI: BRU also started selling the Baby Trend Flex Loc carseat that originally passed along with the Snugride.

Re: Does anyone know how the Graco Safeseat compares to the Snugride as far as safety is concerned??
I just wanted to let you knowthe Baby Bargains review of the SafeSeat is inaccurate. The test that SafeSeat supposedly failed was done incorrectly. The Snugride is no safer and, according to alot of other boards I have been on, the SafeSeat is actually easier to install and safer. Go to the Baby Bargains website and click on their forums. You'll see alot of people praising the SafeSeat. I think Baby Bargains should republish a new edition to fix their error because it freaks a lot of people out.
We have the SafeSeat and I really like it because DS would have grown out of the Snugride a long time ago.

This is not actually accurate -- the speed of the car was not 65mph -- that's the speed that the car was projected to after the crash -- a crash like that no one would survive. The Snugride was not tested the same way, that's why it passed and none of the others did. No car seat would have passed this test the way it was set up. Do a google search on Consumer Reports corrections.
I read a lot about it because I have the SafeSeat and was concerned. Unfortunately, the correction has never been clarified publically and a lot of people still have false impressions about the car seats. From the research I have done, the Graco SafeSeat and Chicco KeyFit are the favorites of Car Seat Techs because they are easy to install and do well in crashes.

Here is the official statement from Consumer Reports:
Consumer Reports Withdraws Infant Car Seat Report Move is Made Pending Additional Testing Now Underway
NEW YORK (Jan. 18) — Consumer Reports is withdrawing its recent report on infant car seats pending further tests of the performance of those seats in side-impact collisions.
A new report will be published with any necessary revisions as soon as possible after the new tests are complete. We withdrew the report immediately upon discovering a substantive issue that may have affected the original test results. The issue came to light based on new information received Tuesday night and Wednesday morning from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning the speed at which our side-impact tests were conducted.
The original study, published in the February issue of Consumer Reports, was aimed at discovering how infant seats performed in tests at speeds that match those used in the government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). This program tests most new vehicles in crashes at speeds of 35 mph for frontal impact and 38 mph for side impact. Child safety seats, in contrast, are currently tested only in front-impact crashes at speeds of 30 mph. Our tests were intended to simulate side crashes at the NCAP speed of 38 mph. The new information raises a question about whether the tests accurately simulated that speed, however, so we are now reviewing our tests and the resulting article.
To those who may have seen the report earlier in print, on the Web, or in broadcasts, we urge you to remember that use of any child seat is safer than no child seat, but to suspend judgment on the merits of individual products until the new testing has been completed and the report re-published.
We appreciate that manufacturers and particularly NHTSA are engaging directly with us on this article, and we applaud NHTSA for giving serious consideration to the development of side-impact child seat tests. Consumer Reports has long advocated adoption of such tests, since government data show that side crashes account for a significant number of child fatalities.
We look forward to re-issuing guidance on child-seat safety as soon as possible.
I stand by what I said originally. Consumer Reports didn't test at 35 MPH - they tested at higher speeds - and at those higher speeds only two seats passed the test.

Not only that but are they comparing the bases or the whole car seat and base?

Re: Does anyone know how the Graco Safeseat compares to the Snugride as far as safety is concerned??
We registered for the Snugride and extra base, as well as the Metrolite stroller because they can all be used together as a travel system. IMO I think all safety tests should be conducted at higher speeds because I know I usually drive faster than 30 mph.
