We have some windows that are very narrow, so we bought one of the free-standing units, and the only thing that goes in the window is the exhaust vent. They sell them all over the place, but here's an example of what they look like:

At the time I bought the freestanding AC, I couldn't find a single vertical AC that had the digital thermostat on it. For bedrooms, I only get the ones that I can program the temp. Otherwise, "8" is fine during the day, but "8" is way too cold at 3am.
Just something to keep in mind when you're looking. They may have added that feature to some of the newer ACs. I bought mine about 5 years ago.
