When I was younger, I was interested in going to Stuy. If I remember correctly, I was not allowed since I lived in LI. I think my option was to use a fake address and we did not want to go that route.

I'm pretty sure you take this test at your NYC middle school so if you don't attend the NYC middle school, I don't think you take the test.

DH went to Stuy and didn't live in the city. But then again, he graduated Stuy in 1984!

Our good friend also went to BHSS but lived on LI as well. But then again, she is just about the same age as DH

I believe so....but you have to pay tuition if you want to attend a NYCPS.

edited to add: you have to pay tuition if you are not a NYC resident.

I googled "SHSAT" (Specialized High School Admissions Test)- which is the test you need to take for those schools. While I can't find a specific website or "requirements" for the test, check this out:

Bronx Science

So, I think the answer is yes.

All applicants must be New York City residents in order to take the examination

DH went to Bronx Science and lived in Queens. I think you need to live in one of the 5 boroughs to go to one of the specialized high schools. HTH

At the time I was going through HS, you had to be a NY resident but I believe I knew some people who at least considered moving into the city for their last year of Middle School (which was Junior High back then) or using grandparents' addresses. I do not think that those types of plans really worked, though.

I was just talking to a friend of mine who went to one of those schools and she told me that the pressure to get the grades to get into a good high school was tremendous. She had never told me that before. She doesn't have regrets but she just wishes she had been easier on herself. She grew up in Manhattan so she is not one of the people I was referring to above.
