It's the number of customers with outages.

its the # of people without power. It took me FOREVER to figure that out yesterday. They key is back on the main page of the outages - not handy when you are trying to see what it means on the map you are actually looking at!

Re: Does Anyone Know What The COLORS On The Lipa Outage Map Mean?

August 29, 2011 - 12:30PM: As of Monday morning, LIPA has restored power to about 25% of the 523,000 customers that were affected by the weekend storm. An estimated 398,000 customers remain without power. Even as we get power back on, we continue to have significant crews in the field who continue to inspect thousands of miles of electric wires and hundreds of electric facilities all across Long Island and the Rockaways. With thousands of damage locations, this is a process that cannot be completed quickly, and is further hindered by flooding, large uprooted trees, downed wires and poles have hampered our efforts.

If your power is off, we understand your frustration and assure you that thousands of LIPA employees and contractors that we have brought here are working every minute of every day to restore your service as quickly as we can. Power is being restored to customers throughout the day, every day.

Areas with red get priority because the goal is to get a lot of people back at once, so red areas are probably getting served first.

If you look on the main page where the map is you'll see a link to the legend. That tells you what all the colors mean. It shoul d be on the map! Took us a few minutes to find it.

Can't be what they're doing since this AM when I checked the map, it said 140 customers in Brightwaters were affected now it says 7. That tells me they did some work in the area...
