Does anyone remember the student that had to go to the ER? (long vent about today)

Well, he's only been in my class on and off for the past week -- he'll come in the AM and get sent home because of his severe behavior. His mom took him to the clinic on Friday and they called an ambulance from there --- and he spend the weekend in Woodhull hopsital --- for evaluation and testing.

On Monday he went home early because he was off the wall...

didn't come to school yesterday...

And today he came --- we spoke in the morning for a bit before we started with our morning routine----and I was hoping he'd have an OK day.

At 9:05 we had computers...and on the way out another student turned off the light --- and he wanted to turn it off.

It wasn't even his job.

He flipped out and jumped the kid. I had to pull him off of the other student. He was punching him so hard in the stomach.

Another teacher saw it and offered to take my class to computers...so I carried him into the nurses office (he is a 1st grader --- 6 years old, TINY skinny little boy) and he proceeded to bang his head agains the cinderblock wall repetedly, pick up a desk and throw it at me, kick the door over and over again and was slamming his arm on the wall saying he was going to break his arm.

We called 911. We had to --- he was going to hurt himself or someone else -- and the region is on our case because we didn't call 911 in the past with him.

12 cops came. I had 12 cops at the school for a little tiny 6 year old. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It BROKE my heart. He was just getting worse and worse as they all showed up --- he got to the point where he was shaking ---- growling ---- spit was flying everywhere --- his eyes were rolling into the back of his head.

It took about 3 big NYPD guys to get this little kid down the stairs .... and mom met them outside of the school and went with him to the ambulance.

Chat Icon I just don't know what is going to happen when he comes bcak to my class tomorrow or friday or monday --- he will be back --- we're reevaling him for a new placement but who knows how long that'll take -- it could be months.

I don't feel like he can go back to my class with any sort of order after EVERYTHING that has happened.

And I just feel so sad that someone can be so young and have so many issues going on in his head. He is such a sweet boy --- I saw that during the first few weeks of school -- it breaks my heart that things are going this way for him.

Thanks for letting me vent. It has just been a long day.

WOW Melissa I feel so bad. Why isnt he iin a SIE program? I know they dont call it that anymore - . Is it still Distict 75? That is where he should be or in a hospital setting. I had a boy once well not as bad nd BOCES even removed him. Good luck to you.

That is really horrible, but I have to be honest Melissa, in the work I've done with emotionally disturbed children, I've come to realize, the ones who act out are the ones who are asing for help. Especially when they get older. I pray for this little one that his issues get resolved. I give you so much credit because it is incredibly difficult to work with these children. You take it home with you everyday even when you wish you didn't.Chat Icon

I agree with Samlove- it sounds like your school is not the place for this child, as much as you want to keep him. I hope the doctors are able to figure out what his problems are.

We have a similar situation in my school with an 8th grader- and it's at the point where he's become dangerous to others and himself.

Wow! It is so sad when they are so little. I had a child in first grade about 4 years ago who was rather severe with emotional behavior. It is very difficult to deal with just make sure you write everything down and don't be afraid to speak up when needed. That is one thing I wish I did back then, even sometimes now!Chat Icon

So sorry you've been through this...

He will not be back in your class tomorrow. They will I'm SURE send him for immediate testing and evaluations. If they fear he's at risk for hurting himself and others, there's no way they're going to just let him right back.

Keep us updated...

I know what it is like to work with such fragile children. They are lucky to have a teacher like you who cares for her students so much and realizes that it is not their fault that they do what they do.

That is what I would think too but this is the 3rd time he has been in the ER this year, and he was ADMITTED to the hospital over the weekend -- came home sunday -- and was still in my class on Monday morning.

As far as him not being in the right placement -- we've already type 3'd him for a Reevaluation but in my experience that takes MONTHS. I had a student last year with severe behaviors as well and until about a week ago he was still in the same setting and we evaluated him in November. It took almost a year for them to place him --- because unfortunately there are just too many kids in the area I teach with these sorts of problems and the programs for them are full. Chat Icon So as much as I can hope that they'll get him into a better place soon --- I have to also have the reality in my mind that it might not happen for a while.

This sounds so similar to a student my sister had in her class last year. (she teaches in Maryland) His outburst were getting violent and dangerous and by about this time of year, maybe a little later they had to call the police for him one day too. He actually ended up in a psychiatric hospital because he told the police he was going to kill his parents!! She teaches 2nd grade and it is so sad to think of such a young kid with such hatred and violence in him.
She actually went to visit him and she said the whole experience was really upsetting. He said to her "so ,Miss F I am here because I am crazy"
Last she heard he was home again and going to a different school.

I hope they are able to get him the help that he seems to so desperately need.

It sounds to me, from what you said about him spending the weekend in the hosp. and then being right back in school on Monday that his mother is in denial or something to that effect that there's something wrong with her child.

I was going to say the same thing. Maybe your school can offer extra support in your classroom since reality is he'll probably be returning and will take a while to be placed elsewhere.

Hang in there sweetie Chat Icon
