This probably has to do with flame retardant materials used. Unfortunately these chemicals are used in many of our items we expose our children to. Even their mattresses.

Also..cars in general have toxic materials in them, or toxic smells. I know I read once that the "new car" smell is actually a toxin in the plastics.
So unfortunately, it is what it is. I am trying not to think about these things too much b/c there are toxins in much of what we use daily.

yeah, it's unfortunate but without these toxins, we wouldn't have car seats...kwim??
but....... this is why I try to use as many natural products as I can with him. controlling as much as I can that is within my control since SOOOOO much of it is out of my control...and being a control freak, I like control.

I've heard this as well which is why the first thing I do when I get in my car is open all the windows and let it 'air out'.

Re: does anyone subscribe to consumer reports? 60% of childrens car seats contain toxic chemicals
Not worried at all, there was an post about this last week. There are so many issues with the tests that I can't put any real faith in their results. Lead in the clips? Yeah, and? There's lead in pencils too. And it occurs in nature. Lead's usually not a worry unless ingested at high levels. Many of us have lead pipes in our homes, PVC pipes delivering our bathing and drinking water. The list goes on.

I don't believe the lead in pencils is of the harmful kind, just wanted to say that.

I actually don't even think it's really lead now that I think about it, but my point is still that many of these "chemicals" they're worried about aren't really that rare and are found in our homes everyday. Chlorine? We use it in swimming pools, tap water, clothing..........
I'd be more worried about formaldehyde offgassing from my children's furniture than this "study".

I really don't sweat all of these things. You will make yourself crazy if you worry yourself over every little thing. I try not to stress. I survived the 70's as a baby which HAD to be worse than now!!

graphite is used in pencils.
ETA: I don't think there is a good or a bad lead. it's just lead. Pb. don't eat it. lead.

I've read from a few places that paint VOCs off-gas for up to a year....
There has never been lead used in wooden pencils. The common name "pencil lead" is due to an historic association with the stylus made of lead in ancient Roman times.

car seat
you dont need to be a member, here is their website and 1 of the reports.
I find it concerning. We debate the 1/2 hour manicure at the nail salon & they are dumping chemicals into all our baby products.... sad

Yes, it's graphite. Here's a list of sites that have info on various health issues related to graphite. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/58223.html There's nothing really dangerous about graphite for the average person.

yeah, and a common thing to do, in the city, if you live in a building with a roach problem is to paint once a year, it keeps them away... apparently roaches know better.

Well being that car seats are lined with styrofoam, that doesn't really surprise me.

Re: does anyone subscribe to consumer reports? 60% of childrens car seats contain toxic chemicals
This is old news. They do this every year. When my DS was a baby I replaced his carseat cover b/c it was one of the worst offenders. I absolutely think that when you are dealing with a baby sitting/sleeping in the car for long rides with their head laying up against the material which in the heat is exuding these gasses it is NOT a good thing. Can it be completely eliminated - no, but, you can definitely minimize it by trying to pick one of the least offenders - at least, that is what I tried to do. Also, alot of these same chemicals are in flame retardant pjs so many kids (unless you put the kids in the snug fitting ones which I do) are getting the chemicals there too - also new, furniture, carpets, paint etc. In isolation none of this is toxic but, if you think about the cummulative effects...scary!
