Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
The ones that look like you're barefoot? If so, how do you like them? I'm considering getting a pair

They're called vibrams.
You can get them at REI if you want to check them out in person.
Let us know if you get them. I am curious about how they feel and am too lazy to go try them on!
This is their site.

Can you find an open field and see how you like barefoot running first? I get plantar faciitis so I'm scared to drop the money on them, but there are other minimalist shoes like nike free.

Re: Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
My co-worker wears them (actually he has now transitioned into flip flop like shoes that really mimic barefoot running better). He suffered from several injuries (sore knees, etc). He also runs 50+ miles a week so I am sure some of this is because of over training.
Anyway, when he first started using them he actually got rid of his original problems, but then developed other problems (foot problems mostly). He would only do a few miles at a time.
If you want to try this, SLOWLY transition into them - a few miles at a time - a few times a week. Also - they are not for everyone. My other co-worker tried them and they caused him to get injured and have to take a decent amount of time off.
As for the Nike Free that Erica mentioned, my DH uses them for his easy, short days. He seems to like them and has never complained about injury from them.

Re: Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
I recommend reading "Born to Run" if you are interested in barefoot running and the body mechanics of running.
I have no intention of switching to barefoot running but it was a great book.
I found it really interesting to learn that those shoes were originally created for boaters/sailors so they could have the barefoot feel on the decks of their boats but have more grip/traction!
It did make me stop focusing so much on the top brand/model shoes and more on what works/is comfortable for me.

Re: Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
Runner's Edge in Farmingdale and Super Runner's shop in Huntington will test you on a treadmill for free and tell you which shoes would be best for your stride and foot/arch type. I'm thinking about going in to do it this weekend.
As with most everything, I think it may depend on a lot of factors, whether they would be good for you or not. Since everyone's different, I wouldn't assume that they're the right choice without trying them first.

I just looked this book up on Amazon, it looks really interesting! Did you buy it or check it out from the library?
I think I should definitely look more into it before I buy the shoes, I'll probably go to Runner's Edge in the next few weeks. My SIL just got them for her bf for his birthday and he loves them. I ran barefoot a lot when I was younger so I thought they might work for me. We'll see!

I don't love the way they feel. I got them as a gift, and have never worn them to work out. I go to try them, and then put them on my feet and remember I don't like them It might just be the shape of my toes though. I talked to my podiatrist about them, and like OP mentioned, he said to sloooowly ease into them if you use them.

Re: Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
I don't think I'd like them for the fact that my feet sweat a lot & I need to wear socks to absorb it! Otherwise, I'd try them out.

I think there are socks that you can wear with them.

Re: Does anyone wear those funny running shoes?
My friend who is a physical therapist said they are not good for you. Since I'm into running now I asked her and she basically said they don't give you the support you need. She told me to stick with a regular running shoe. Definitely go to a proper running store and get fitted for them. After you go once you'll know what brand and shoe works best for you in the future.

I bought the book and then passed it along to friends and family members who run. I really enjoyed it.
