Does anyone work at a museum?
I have always dreamed of working in a museum, ever since I was a kid (yes, I have always been a geek, as you, I am sure, have just concluded)
I am just wondering how one gets into that kind of work... I do have an art degree but no masters-another dream, unattainable so far...

I don't work in a museum, but I have a degree in Art History. While in college a professor brought this site to our attention, I think it's great!

Re: Does anyone work at a museum?
Wow, thank you, Michelle, this is a great site! I feel like anything I would be interested in, would require a Masters... I would love to get a MA in Art History, actually.... It has always been a passion of mine...
What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?

Erica, that would be a very good fit for me, I believe, in booth allowing me to teach and do research work, but is that a kind of position that exists in USA? I thought it was a European thing...

NY Museums do in fact have docent programs but they tend to be volunteer positions requiring a relatively rigorous training program. At least this is the case when I looked into museum jobs a few years back after getting a BFA.
Without a masters, you may have better luck in a smaller gallery setting, but then the work environment can be very very different from a larger established museum or publicly funded museum.

Re: Does anyone work at a museum?
I had an interview at the American Museum of Natural History years ago. I know they list current jobs on their website. Some other museums do to. There are a lot of positions at large museums. You don't need a masters for all of them. I think there is a museum jobs website too. If I remember it I will let you know.

Re: Does anyone work at a museum?
I ALWAYS wanted to do that too!!! From what I remember, I did some research years ago - there was a degree program for Museum Administration or something like that. I want to say it was in Washington DC.

My cousin got a degree from George Washington U in DC- I think the degree is called Museum Studies or Museum Education- it qualifies you more for implementing/running programs, often for schoolkids. I think there was also an option where you could get certification to teach in public schools. She student taught in a charter school as part of the program and worked in the Bug Room at the Smithsonian. I think the job market is tough though.
