Does anyone work for Nassau or Suffolk County?
I am considering taking a civil service test. I would be taking a substantial paycut, but I hear the benefits are good. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of their job are? How are the hours?

I work for a local township and they also hire off of the suffolk county civil service lists-as do the police department and school districts-typically the towns and schools pay more than the county...feel free to fm me!

My mom works for the county,
The pay sux You can get treated like crap because people feel you are an endencured servant since you are a civial servant. Some of the jobs could tear you apart emotionally. My Mom worked for CPS for years and years and could tell you stories that would just tear you up inside. But there were emotional rewards of seeing some kids thrive in the right environment.
As for the perks:
Great benefits Great amount of time and days off Hours in her department are pretty flexible
Any specific questions let me know and I will ask her for you.

don't think you could post a real con unless you know the specific job that you are looking to get...
it is a difficult to generalize all jobs like that
But specifically they pretty much have good benefits, good retirement packages and are protected by a union.
as for general cons...cant think of one
IMO...take the test. You can always say no to a job after the fact

I agree. Depending on the position, the pay really varies, and so do the increases in salaries.
As other people said, the benefits are great and you will probably have a hard time finding something that gives you as much time off.
The other thing you might want to know is that once the tests are scored, candidates are ranked according to scores and generally those who score higher are looked at first. I would recommend finding out if there are study materials available for the test you want to take and looking them over.

Does anyone know the dates of the next tests? I took them years ago but was only offered a pt job so I could not take it.

what test are you looking to take?
I've taken a few. I just recently had an interview with the school district by me but I can't do the hours offered

I work for Empire BCBS and we are the health insurer for Suffolk COunty employees as of last year.
Let me tell you they have the best benefits I have EVER SEEN and I have seen THOUSANDS of employers ....
Suffolk allows almost everything to be covered and if its not...fight it and they allow it.
