Are you talking about the neighborhood section of SB off of SB Road - west side of SB Rd?

Re: does anyonen live in/know univ section/stony brook?
We looked at a house there that I loved, but we were outbid. We bought in a similar area nearby. It's a very nice area, but the one thing that I really don't like is that many of the houses are rented to Stony Brook students, and are not well taken care of. You can tell which houses are rentals, and some people I talked to said some of the student renters got rowdy/had loud parties, etc. I mean, there are bad neighbors everywhere, and I do love the area, so it wouldn't have stopped me from buying there.

we considered the area but there were to many rentals for us. constant parties and kids even durning the day time hours when we were looking at the houses, that I couldn't imagine what it was like durning the evening. lots of cars on the streets etc. And we looked in the spring when college was almost out for the year.
If you really love the house, wait until college is back in session and see how it is with all the college kids. if your ok with it, go for it!

I heard this too! I am not sure about the area for a young family, with a small child.

Wow. This is new information for me. I guess the names of the road should imply that its tied in closely with the college. I hung out on the block for a while and saw a bunch of older people. Not too many kids which I was upset about, but I didnt get the feeling of a college town. I cant really wait until college time, engineer is done and contracts come on Monday. Now Im nervous!

go knock on the neighbors door, see who answers.
I was at target the other day and there was a stony brook bus full of kids, so some might start moving in this weekend.
its still a safe area, and not all the rentals will be rowdy. good luck!

You're in luck, classes start Monday so they'll be all moved in! I mean, it's within walking distance of the college, so it is prime rentals for students.
I don't know that it would have stopped me from moving there, but I am much happier with the nearby neighborhood we wound up buying in.

Move in day for freshmen was yesterday, and I made the mistake of going to Target... AVOID Target/Walmart this weekend!

Now Im nervous! to be honest, I would still buy the house then. I would take a safe area over an area with high rates of crime any day of the week. And that's all you have here. Your buying in a wonderful school district, in a lovly town, near a ton of stores! it's just college kids, who at times may be loud and host parties. but for the most part, they will be harmless. the flip side of it is that there will be kids in and out all day long, so burglars will be detered in an area like that

I don't think college kids renting would deter me from buying in an area...
