Does anyone's child get counseling as part of their IEP?
The reason I am asking is my son is in kindergarten ICT. To say it has been rough is an understatement. The teacher sends home a behavior chart that tracks him each period (every 20 min). He does good sometimes and sometimes not. My DH says he just turned 5. Do you know how hard it is for a little boy to sit still and behave ALL day? Ok, I get that. He has a lot of trouble with calling out, sitting still.
Monday was the worst. They were singing a song he didn't want and he started screaming (he's never done that) and had to go for a walk around the school to calm down.
I feel like crying everyday. My son tells me he is bad and will be good tomorrow. I have tried everything from rewards to threading, you name it. I really think its impulse issues.
He gets OT & Speech (although they hinted speech would probably go away for him). He also hates writing which is part of the problem.
I'm not sure what counseling exactly is? Do you think it would help? I'm thinking maybe if he verbalized to the counselor how he was feeling (since it's not getting anywhere with the teacher since the behavior is not improving).

My son is also 5 and just started K. He started getting counseling this year. It is a social skills group. They focus on how to express what you are feeling instead of acting out. He has been having a very hard transition to kindergarten. We do a behavior chart also with the school and he has good days and bad days. He looks forward to counseling. It is a group with 2 other boys. They play games and eat lunch together. He started about 1 1/2 months ago but I have not seen an improvement in behavior. He knows how to verbalize his feelings but he still acts out.

My son is older, but has received counseling since 4th grade. It's a social group with a few other kids. They have played games, talked, etc. It's not counseling like we know it as (i.e. 1:1 with a therapist and talking about your problems).

Yes they can definitely do counseling. They will work on coping skills - what he can do if he doesn't like a song or is frustrated with writing, etc. DD gets counseling twice a week. One individual and one group. We also do private therapy once a week and that therapist works with the others to make sure they are all teaching the same thing.
