does anyone's kid only talk to them?

had speech this AM.

we were talking about how he really doesn't need speech anymore.

I told therapist that if she thinks he has graduated, she has no idea since he barely speaks to her.

She was shocked when I told her everything he says to me. He makes up stories, gives me lists all day long, reads his books to me.

She said he's definitely not shy, we think he has low self confidence in his speech.

Since I understand everything he says, he always talks to me. If he has an issue with DH, he will tell me to tell DH...probably since DH only understands 75% of what he says.

he will speak to his friends, but never their parents...well once to tell my friend her kid was a mess and she needs a wipe.

thoughts? thanks!

Re: does anyone's kid only talk to them?

My DS (almost 23 months) is pretty shy - i guess that is how I describe it. He talks ALOT all day long around people he knows - in sentances, conversational, singing songs just pointing things out etc. those who we are close with would describe him as very verbal and a big talker.

That said - When DS is around strangers or family or friends he doesn't know well or large groups - he will barely say hi and bye and, if he does speak it is a tiny voice you can barely hear. If a stranger says hello to him he will just stare at them with no reaction. He is the same way whether it is a child or an adult - kids he knows he will talk to - those he doesn't he will shy away from.

Sometimes, strangely there are people he reacts to that he doesn't know at all - for some reason he doesn't act shy around these people and talks to them normally but,for the most part thisis not thenorm.

He is slowly getting better and less shy but he still has a much different personality around strangers than around family.

Not my kids, but I've seen this happen pretty frequently with other kids throughout my teaching career.

It could be that he gets frustrated or embarrassed when people dont understand him so he chooses to tell you since he knows you will understand.

DD is on the shy side and only talks to others when VERY comfortable with them.
