When we use them for things at work the sterno is over a plastic tablecloth and nothing ever happens. But I guess if your countertops were formica I could see if one got knocked over there might be cause for concern.

Yes it gets hot. I wouldn't put it on countertops. My biggest concern would be having a flame that would be easy to slide if someone knocks into it. I prefer sterno racks (we have some if you want to borrow & are in the area).

I put cardboard under them b/c I was worried about my countertops. I think it mostly gets hot on the bottom when it's nearing the end, but I didn't want to chance it.
eta- AND I used the racks but still was worried.

Re: does the bottom of a sterno get hot?
i have a rack i guess. its part of the tray holder. so the sterno is not directly in the countertop and its held secure in the tray holder. it sits up about half and inch

I think you would be fine as long as it's in the sterno rack. I have granite and nothing has ever happened. If it would make you feel better maybe put a small salad plate or tea cup saucer underneath just to be on the safe side.

Re: does the bottom of a sterno get hot?
I just had a party last night where I used sternos. I also used a rack so it was not directly on the table. The metal rack though was a little hot by the end of the night. I also had a plastic tablecloth underneath the racks. I have done it that way on my wood table a bunch of times and nothing ever happened. If it makes you nervous than put a piece of cardboard, pot holder, etc. underneath the sterno or underneath the rack just for piece of mind.
