Does this make KWH & Lighting & Cost -Check my math
okay stupid topic but...
while trying to figure out how might in electric it would cost me to put plants under lights i became a little confused. you know how they say lighting is one of your biggest electric consumtion in your house? (i have the new bulbs) but let's just say you had the old bulbs 100 watts and so it would cost you under 10 cent (i checked my lipa bill) to run it for 10 hours. how is that one of the biggest part of your electric bill then?? anyhow...
this was what i was calculating:
20 watt Fluorescent Tube x 10 of them and running them for 10 hours per day.
So 10 bulbs x 20 watts each= 200 watts/hour
200 watts x 10 hours= 2 kwh per day
and 10 cent per kwh (actually less but for easy math) which comes to 20 cent for day
does this make sense?
math is not my strong point

I'm under the impression that your appliances - refridgerator, dryer - and a/c are the largest consumers of electricity...not lightbulbs. In the grand scheme of things, they are almost insignificant.

Re: Does this make KWH & Lighting & Cost -Check my math
All I know is that my LIPA bill is the smallest bill I have. I pay more for water & landscaping than I do for electric. Of course, it's just DH and I in the house and we work all day so nothing is on during the day.
Now my oil bill....

I actually work for an Energy Efficient Lighting Company.
20w CFL actually generally draws 22w (nominal value versus actual draw).
10 bulbs x 22 watts = 220 total watt draw
Kilowatts = Total Watt Draw / 1000 = 0.220 KW
KWH = KW x hours of usage = 0.220 x 10 = 2.20
Cost - KWH x cost - 2.20 x 0.10 = 0.22 per day
