Does this sound like a good plan?

DS (almost 3) has these loveys that he sleeps with. He sucks on them and they are GROSS. I have to wash them all several times a week.

Since they are loveys, I don't feel like I can get rid of them, since they all have names and he calls them "my guys" like they are his friends Chat Icon

Yesterday, after a time-out, he asked if he could bring one of his new/clean loveys with him. DH told him yet but that he couldn't suck on them. He held onto that lovey, along with another toy, without sucking on it for about 2 hours before bed.

So now, my thinking is, I want to try and transition these loveys from sucking toys to regular toys by having him hold onto them outside of his bedroom for a few hours a day.

However, I'm concerned that this will backfire and that he will want to suck on them wherever he is, and I'll have to make him put them back in his crib, which will lead to a TOTAL meltdown.

It's just that I thought he would have given up this habit by now and I'm going to start to worry about his teeth, and the possible fur/stuffing he could be ingesting by sucking on them so much.

Any advice would be so appreciated!

I wouldn't have him do that.. IMO, you're opening yourself up to another problem.. My kids have a gazillion loveys too (moreso my son and he STILL sleeps with them lol) but I won't allow them to take it out of their rooms and only make an exception if we are having movie night on the couch or something..

I wouldn't do it...but I would try to get him to stop sucking on them. Since he did it for 2 hours, sounds like he's ready to try just holding them without bathing them in saliva.Chat Icon

That's a tough one. If it were me, I'd hate the potential of creating another habit difficult to break (bringing loveys everywhere).

What would happen if you "lost" one? And slowly removed them that way? He may ask for a few days but possibly move on?
