Does this sound like enough food for a party with 55 people?
There will be anywhere from 50-60 people, I assume 55...
This is the menu so far. We are on a budget (my brothers and I are paying for our moms surprise party) but don't want to "cheap out"...
-Large tray of penne ala vodka -Large tray of sausage/peppers (rolls on the side) -2 large trays of chicken marsala 1 1/2 large trays of eggplant rolatini Two 6 foot heroes (italian & american) -cold salads on the side
The hot italian food is enough to serve 50. It SHOULD be enough but of course I feel neurotic. I am also second guessing the chicken choice, but my mom loves marsala...
There will be cake, a chocolate fountain, fruit platters etc for dessert. Also chips/dip/salsa put on tables before food is served.
what do you think? TIA!

Re: Does this sound like enough food for a party with 55 people?
I don't think 1 tray of pasta is enough...but I have a big Italian family.
I would do a penne ala vodka, then a pasta with a white sauce for variation. Maybe a carbonara, primavera, alfredo, white clam, etc...to mix it up a bit.
Also, in my party planning experiences...I find the hero NEVER goes when you have hot foods. I always wind up with 3/4 leftover. I would do 1 hero...cut smaller pieces. Or do wraps.
Maybe do another meat dish...like a Swedish meatball, a different chicken (in addition to the marsala), ribs...etc.

ITA. One hero is more than plenty with the hot food. Maybe even consider just 1 4-ft hero.

Good advice, thanks! I think my aunt mentioned making another thing of pasta to have as extra...
I am still wondering about the heroes...I am just nervous about not having enough. I think a 6 foot serves about 20 or so....and if its a super hot day (its outside) I wonder if people won't really want the hot food?? I don't know. It comes in 3 foot increments, maybe i'll do 9 feet total instead of 12??

I agree that it doesn't sound like enough pasta. How many people does the 6 foot hero serve? 2 does sound like a lot in addition to the rest of the food. Are you definite on getting the heroes? Bc I think using the $$ towards an additional hot tray might be better. Sounds yummy though, if you have extras let us know

I am thinking you guys may be right
I am not dead set on heroes. I just thought that b/c its outside in late june, it seemed appropriate? But I can add more pasta and just get a 6 foot hero with some salads...that sounds good...
If I run out of heroes and my guests start throwing pasta at me, I'll know who to blame!!

I agree with this.
I would also say that I would NEVER order something as simple and cheap to make as penne ala vodka from a caterer.
you can make twice as much for half the price. even less than that.
if you were considering making anything, I would make that and the green salad and order the rest.
eta: if it's outside in late june, what about hot dogs and burgers instead of the hero's all together?
they just never go. and they can't really be saved for very long. but extra hamburgers and hot dogs will be good for the summer!

It sounds like enough but I would do 2 large trays of pasta bc that fills people up. Everything else sounds so good, you might have a few extra people showing up!! I think a 6ft hero serves more than 20 people with all of the other things you've got. Remember, when they make those estimates they aren't taking into account all of the hot dishes that you're serving.

I am actually making the penne a la vodka! Its the one homemade thing, I didn't want to pay the caterer for it and i make reallly good vodka sauce...
As for the hot dogs/hamburgers..I would love to, but I don't want to ask anyone to be in charge of grilling..its a lot of work, i'd rather just put out stuff...

I would just add another tray of pasta, but I tend to over feed.

Re: Does this sound like enough food for a party with 55 people?
What if you put the heroes out first with the chips and stuff. Since it is a surprise party people may be waiting around for a while until you put all the food out. That will hold them over until the dinner comes out and that way they won't attack the food when you do put it out. It would also give you a little break since you won't be in a rush to put the food out as soon as your mom does arrive.
