Re: Does your 3 yr old write? hold the pen/pencil correctly?
Meh.. every kid is different.
AJ has ALWAYS held the crayon correctly. To the point that altho we bought the chubby starter crayon things.. she never used them.. hated the way they felt. My aunt gave her crayons and literally day one. She's never fisted a crayon and really has always done well with writing (god knows she doesn't get it from me). So we're saying .. umm 10m or so she was holding a crayon correctly. Something my aunt always marveled at.
She was lefty at first and righty now.. I had her evaluated for speech twice and so happens both times she was writing. 18m and 25m. The evaluator only said she recommended us giving her the option of either hand (put the crayon in the middle of her work area not right or left) they didn't seem overly impressed she could hold a crayon correctly as much as they were impressed she was drawing ovals (circles) and pretty consistent lines (tho wobbly). right now she's nearly 3 (august) and she's getting better at writing out A "down, down, across" and much better at "O" of course.
I don't encourage (per se) or expect her to write her letters by the end of the year, but my aunt is hoping to teach her more over the summer. I guess I think there's always time for that stuff later.
I still say each kid is different. She took FOREVER to talk (28m) and now she counts to 15 and counts to 10 in both english and spanish using her fingers! Given what my kid can and can't do I figure as long as there is a middle ground, there will always be highs and lows in skills. I figure all and all its all a wash. haha
I just saw a news piece on a pre-k all outdoors with NO writing or reading.
Meh

According to the OTs that I work with- actual "writing" is not developmentally appropriate until about 5. At 3, pre-writing skills should be encouraged (circles,'x's, horizontal and vertical lines) but things like actual letter formation and especially grip shouldn't be formally targeted.
I had a conversation recently with one OT who said she feels the reason we see so many children in school with handwriting issues is because we push them to start writing before they are mature enough to develop an appropriate tripod grasp.
At 3 yo letter recognition is way more important than formation.
I agree-I've talked to my son's OT on this topic (in reference to my 3.5 year old) and she said the same.

DS is 3.5 and had been writing his name and letters and shapes for a while now (at least 8-10 months or so) but NOT holding the crayon/pencil correctly.
