Does Your Bank Allow You To Deposit 3rd Party Checks?
Meaning a check made payable to someone, that person endorses the check and you then sign it and put it in your account? I wasn't asking for money back, just depositing it. Commerce gave me a REALLY hard time about this today over a whopping $160 check. I was about ready to just take it to my regular bank (credit union) where they gladly accept 3rd party checks, but she said she would make an exception this one time but in the future, the person on the check would have to be added to my account Is this the norm? I do 99% of my banking at a Credit Union and have never had an issue with this type of transaction.

I worked for both Commerce and Wamu. No 3rd party checks.
Not that you do it but there are people who steal checks.

Re: Does Your Bank Allow You To Deposit 3rd Party Checks?
After 9-11, some banks stopped accepting 3rd party checks. Out of all the banks I know of, only one non commerical bank I go to still accepts them.

Re: Does Your Bank Allow You To Deposit 3rd Party Checks?
I think its really about security--heck even your own security.
A lot of those Nigerian check scams from like Craigslist and email look legit--and are 3rd party checks you deposit into your account.....and then it clears and it takes weeks for them to realize the check was fake and you're out money. So I think because of that--banks are really getting more strict about 3rd party checks so that they & their customers aren't burned.

Ahh so they do have a rule about it. I wasn't sure if she was just giving me a hard time. If you are an account holder, that seems a little odd since they can always take the money back if the check you deposited was "stolen".
I also find it odd that the checks I deposit NEVER show up on the online banking until they clear. They should at least show up as pending. I guess I should just take all of our banking to my Credit Union and stop complaining
Thanks for your reply!!

But think about the people who steal the checks.... Commerce has next day avai. so those people will go the next morning and withdraw the money or even close the account. How does Commerce get it back then?
Your welcome!

I dunno, I guess the same way other banks get their money back when someone overdraws their account. They sue them, garnish their wages and put a judgement on their property. I could see if I brought in a 3rd party check for a huge sum of money, but that wasn't the case (unfortunately!!)

Re: Does Your Bank Allow You To Deposit 3rd Party Checks?
the bank isnt going to sue over $160, so they would just eat the loss - and that would add up.
Unfortunatley a small population of people are scam artists and losers and make it hard for honest people to live

Re: Does Your Bank Allow You To Deposit 3rd Party Checks?
Bank of America would give you a hard time too. They wouldn't even let DH deposit a check made out to both of us since I wasn't there (We have seperate but linked accounts due to his job).
