Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
I always thought it was law that kindergarten was required. Now I hear you can skip it. Does anyone know what the rule is?
If you skip kindergarten, what age can you enter 1st grade?

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
it is not required. since my son is late december, i chose to hold him back. the board of education said because he will beturning six he needs to go into first. i believe he needs kindergarten, and catholic schools will allow him to enter k and thats one of the reasons we chose private school.

My Ava is 12/28. Does that mean when we go to register her for school she can't go to kindergarten in public schools? Or do I have the right to skip K and go right to first grade? I"m a little confused.

Are you in NY? If you are in NY, as the pp said kindergarten is NOT mandatory. You can hold them back if you chose to. My friend held her son (Nov birthday) back a grade but he did attend kindergarten the following year.

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
In NY, Kindergarten is not mandatory, however, your child WILL have to be screened before entering right into 1st grade. The curriculum has changed SO much since we were kids. My kindergartener is reading and doing addition and subtraction.
The cut off for Kindergarten is December 1, so a child born after that, would start K the September that he/she is 5 turning 6.
In my opinion, seeing how much my son is doing, I do not know why anyone would skip kindergarten. I truly feel that a child that is put right into 1st grade will be at a disadvantage academically.

Of course she can go to kindergarten in a public school, but she will go when she is 5 turning 6 in December.
I am pretty sure that she will still start first grade when she is 6 turning 7 in December. Most districts cut off dates are November 30 or December 1.

kindergarten is not mandatory...however I don't recommend skipping it. The kindergarten curriculum is what the 1st grade one was when we were in school. They do reading and math activities (DH is a kindergarten teacher). There is no more nap time in kindergarten!

Are you kidding? 5 year old kid are now doing additions and substrations. This is nuts!
I guess if I get a #2, I will have to make sure my infant knows her/his ABC before coming out of the womb.

ITA. DS has spelling tests every week, and "book reports". He has to write a little bit about a book that he just read. He has homework just about every night. It's amazing what they have to do in Kindergarten. You definitely don't want to skip it.....

That is exactly what my DD did. She was 5 turning 6 on 12/16. She is now in 3rd grade and she is 9. She is the oldest in her class.

No she can go. I chose not to. The cutoff for Queens is December 31. I did not want my son to be the youngest in his class so I chose not to put him into Kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year. Because I did that the BOE wants me to put him directly in first because he would be turnng 6 and would be too old for K. Their solution was to put DS into K and if he did not do well then he could repeat it! I found that ridiculous..well dealing with anyone in my experience who works for the BOE is ridiculous.

Is there a reason why you would not want your child to go to kindergarten???
One of my first memories was being so excited to start big girl school - kindergarten.

i agree! i work at a school in NJ, and its amazing what the kids are required to learn in kindergarten! they do reading, some basic addition and subtraction, they learn about monarch butterflies and their "crysalis"... its not just about crafts and naptime anymore! its such an important "foundation" year and really helps them adjust to being in school, etc.

yup! they do addition and subtraction. but its not unreasonable for a 5 or 6 year old to be able to do! i think its really pretty basic 1 + 1= 2, 4 - 2= 2, that kind of stuff. and most of them totally get it, and do well. its amazing what kids can learn and understand at young ages!! you just have to teach them

Not only are they doing addition and subtraction, my 5 year old niece gave all us adults a very long and detailed (and correct - we checked) lesson on hte solar system. She knew all the planets in order, which was the hottest, why it was hot, etc...
IT AMAZING to me how much they k now at such a young age! I dont think I knew my ABCs when I entered K!

Me neither! I learned them in 1st grade with the little letter people, etc. It flips me out when Amber comes home with spelling assignments and math projects..and she's in Pre-K The kid can spell though, so I'm screwed when I try to spell out something she's not supposed to know about

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
Also something else to consider is that a lot of friendships are formed in kindergarten. Our district is half day & you can't believe the playdates.
I'm not saying your 1st grader won't make friends, but I do know that my daughter already has several girls & I can see how they can get lost in the shuffle when the classes merge as everyone thinks the new student is in the other class.

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
Molly is 11/25 and made the cut off by only 5 days. if she had not made cut off Scott and I had planned on her going to private K and then advancing to 1st grade. I have known a few people who have done that. It is really important that you know your child and what will work for them. I could have easily kept her out of K and had her go the following year. That is actually a big trend now so that you give your child a competive advantage of being one of the oldest kids in a grade and thus, for some, the ability to advance more quickly. Molly was 110% ready for K since she had been in pre-school full time for so many years already. I would not go from pre-school to 1st grade though. Molly is reading, has weekly spelling tests, is learning the way around the school/structure of the classes, doing real math (include some simple multiplication), working on money values. She needs all of those for a 1st grade foundation.

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
In NY kindergarten is not mandatory but seeing how much more they do in school now compared to how it was when i went to school i think it should be. Actually in our school district the school wishes that pre-k was mandatory because by the time they enter kindergarten they want them to already know the things that we were just learning in kindergarten.

Re: Does your child have to go to Kindergarten?
Kindergarten is not required by law.
My DD is currently in kindergarten, and I would tell any parent it is a MUST HAVE. She has learned so so much, socially and academically. I think it has taught her the dynamics of real school, and it has given her a year to adjust to it when the academics aren't too serious. By 1st grade they're really starting to learn, and I wouldn't want my kid to have to adjust to all of the social aspects of school and still try to learn at the level the teachers want them to.

Yup they do, and I'm glad about this, my parents who were both raised in Europe knew addition, subtraction, etc at a much younger age than I was taught in the pubic school system here, and personally I like that they're making it a bit more "challenging" at an early age, thats JMO, and that's partially why I want DD going to Kindergarten...
