Dog recommendation
DH and I are considering getting a dog. He's convinced and ready to go get it. I'm not and I have to research first. We are looking for a dog that is pretty low key, good with children and also good for someone with allergies (me).
DH works nights and I work days so there is someone home all the time. We have a house and a pretty good sized property (almost 1/2 acre).
I am looking for recommendations/suggestions for types of dogs. I would love to buy from a shelter but my allergies are a concern, so we may have to go to a breeder. Although since I've never even looked into this before, I could be mistaken.
Any ideas?

If you go to animal planet http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do
this might help to see what kind of dog is right for you.

she has allergies so these wouldn't be good dogs for her. there's a post about this from last week, i listed the type of dogs that are "hypo allergenic" and alot of people gave good advice on it. you should definitely take a look. once you find a breed, you can do searches from breed specific rescues and petfinder.com and remember, cross breeds, you'll never find a "responsible breeder" because it's not a real breed. the whole purpose of breeding a dog is to make the breed better so just do your research and you'll find exactly what you need!! just from what you've said, i'd suggest either a shih tzu or a maltese. both great lap dogs!!

Re: Dog recommendation
Our Vet said the best dogs for allergy sufferers are: Schnauzers (all sizes), Poodles, Schnoodles, and Westies. HTH! Those are supposed to be the most allergy-friendly out of all the hypoallergenic dogs. We have a mini schnauzer and LOVE her - she is so obedient, smart, loving, gentle, and does not shed which is so nice!
Try Petfinder -- you can get a purebred dog that meets your needs AND rescue them at the same time! There is a search option and you can put in the kind of dog you want to find!

Re: Dog recommendation
My whole families has allergies...my sister has a schnauzer, and my parents and I have miniature poodles. They have never caused problems with our allergies, and they are all really good around my sister's kids. The schnauzer definitely has the most energy out of the bunch so he needs a little more exercise than the poodles. HTH!
