Dog taking DD's stuffed animals

How do I get our dog to STOP taking DD's stuffed animals and toys? DD's bedroom is on the first floor and I'm constantly telling her she needs to keep the door closed, but she forgets (she's almost 7). The dog will go in and take shoes/toys whenever he gets the chance. I have tried a spray bottle with water, a rolled up newspaper, saying "NO" sternly...but nothing works. Any ideas? He's a good boy 90% of the time and the other 10% he's taking stuff!

Re: Dog taking DD's stuffed animals

have you tried teaching him to drop it
or
when he drops it, take the toy and give him something he should have--like his toy or a treat

He knows drop it, when trading treats, but not for his own toys. He would rather have her toys or shoes!

Dog taking DD's stuffed animals

My 1.5 year old dog is a toy chomper. I have toddlers and they not only scatter their toys around the house they hand the dog their toys to watch her chomp. My dog knows "drop it" and "leave it" but she is still young and honestly, considering they literally hand her the toys to destroy it's not really fair for me to "reprimand" her so I have to use redirection. Mostly, I will either tell her "leave it" or just call her to me and have her "give it". then I trade her one of her toys or bones for whatever she has. If she is chewing plastic at the time I offer her something plastic like her nylabone, if she is chewing a stuffed animal I offer her a plush dog toy.

She has a selection of plush toys of her own to destroy. I have a large variety of toys for them to chew. I have very strong plush toys (Tuffy's brand toys) and cheap destroyable plush toys. My dogs LOVE it when they get new plush toys. I make a big deal about them and squeak them to get them excited and tell them this is YOUR toy. Once they mouth them a bit they know their scent and they know those are fair game. I have a room filled with all sorts of kids toys and the dogs toys are also floating around in the mix. They can tell the difference. BUT it's pretty important that you need to substitute similar texture in the toys since that is what they are seeking out on their own to chew.

How old is your dog, if he is young he may outgrow it. Assuming he is locked up/kept away from your daughters room when you are not able to supervise him, I would just keep working on leave it and drop it. I would also hand him his own plush toys (he may destroy them, and if it's got a squeaker you need to check the toys for damage and throw away the sqeaker if it gets de-squeaked ) Tuffy's toys are a really strong brand of plush toys. Consider trying one of them. He probably likes different textures, I would give him a variety of textures. I would make sure he has his own plush toys in different textures of fabrics, a large sized deer or elk antler and a nylabone to chew. I would also offer him a kong toy stuffed with something tasty.

As with anything destroyable everything needs to be supervised and inspected for damage. getting the right size of pet toys is important, smaller ones are easier to chew up and choke on.
