Dog trainer or group classes in Queens or Western Nassau? (with self-indulgent yet adorable doggy pics inside)
So, we adopted Ozzie about 2 months ago. He's about 2 years old, and is fantastic. A beagle/boston terrier mix, we think, he is super friendly with people (even kids), a big mush, so smart, learned all his commands in 2 weeks. He's really amazing.
Lately, he has started to show some aggression to other dogs. We can't figure out what triggers it, and it can happen both on and off leash. We *think* he just wants to play but doesn't know how to do it correctly, and sometimes gets nervous so tries to show that he is dominant before he can get hurt. He hasn't, thankfully, hurt another dog yet but he will growl, snarl, and on occasion go after another dog. We always either have a good hold on him or are watching closely, and if we raise our voice to tell him to stop he has, so far, listened immediately. Still, we want to work on it and though I am an experienced owner and trained him in his commands myself I know this may be over my head.
We would love to work with a trainer, either someone who will come to the park with us or offers group classes, to help understand and correct the behavior using positive reinforcement techniques. Anyone have any recommendations?? Thanks!
And, here's Ozzie! Image Attachment(s):
