Dog walking on my property

I live down a long driveway that I share with two other homes. We each have our separate driveways but we have to go down this driveway to get to our own.

Every morning this woman walks her westie and has him/her do their thing right by our mailboxes at the foot of the easement.

DH tells me it's no big deal, but she doesn't clean it up.

It's private property, I pay taxes and my landscaper takes care of that area as well.

What are my rights here. Do I say something?

I don't know what legal recourse you can take, but I think as a homeowner in the neighborhood, you have every right to ask her to clean up after her dog. That's only fair.

Re: Dog walking on my property

It really bugs me. My mailbox is on my property like any one elses. Should I bring a dog over to her lawn and let him/her poop on it?

I hear ya...

Like I said, I would try to speak to her and see if you get anywhere. Hopefully, she'll start cleaning up after him/her.

Re: Dog walking on my property

I would 100% make sure to run into her the next time she is walking the dog and tell her she needs to clean up after her dog, as she is walking the dog on private property.

She may not realize it's private property (though even if she doesn't, she still needs to be cleaning up after her dog).

That would annoy me to NO END.

It's punishable by a fine in most areas, I think... though no idea how you get someone to enforce that.

My smart@$$ would say pick it up and drop it on her doorstep with a note telling her that you think she forgot something.

In all honesty, I would say something next time you saw her.

Even if she thinks it's not private property she needs to pick it up. That's just gross to leave around.

Re: Dog walking on my property

I have seen her while I am driving down my driveway to go to the train. I'm always rushed to make my train but I send her a dirty look. Even if the dog just pees there, it's my property. Do I have a right to tell her to have her dog do his business somewher else?

I would address it to her, and then if she continues to not clean it. Then i would pick it up and put it on her lawn.

Re: Dog walking on my property

If you own the property, she's trespassing. You have every right to tell her to stop. However, the longer she sees you and you don't say anything, the longer she's going to think it's okay to walk her dog there and not clean it up.

I'd start saying something EVERY single time I see her there.

ITA. Are you in a development or homeowners assoc'n? If so report it to management.

I hate this to no end. Recently someone was doing this to my mother's property. She lives on a corner of a busy secondary road and people seem to think that because it is the side of the house that it is public propertyChat Icon One day my mom finally caught the woman walking her dog on the side of the house (on her lawn, too, not even in the street or anything) and came out & said hi & acted all friendly. She asked where she lived & when the woman asked why she said, "So I can have my dogs $h!t all over your lawn." The woman has never come backChat Icon

yep, next time I see her I'm going to do this. I'm sure she doesn't know it's private property. She could just move two feet to her left and have the dog do it there.

And no matter where the dog poops, the law is she has to pick it up - private property or not. She can be fined.

ITA - if it is too uncomfortable for you to say something to her face to face, have her fined and see how quickly she starts cleaning up after her dog. Public or private, how can you NOT clean up after your dog??

Re: Dog walking on my property

put a sign up clean up after your dog or leave a bag for her to use. Maybe then she would get the point. I hate people who are not responsible pet owners. We always pick up after my dog even in our own yard.

Re: Dog walking on my property

My Dad had the same problem years ago. This woman would walk her two dogs right on his lawn. She would never clean up after them. After months of asking her to clean up after the dogs with no results, my father fashioned a sign above the most recent 'gift' that said, "THANKS FOR THE DOG SH*T!"

That got results.
