Doggies and pregnancy...
I had posted this before on ttc but felt stupid.
Im scared to get pregnant and have a baby.... BECAUSE my dog is BAD! Of course im nervous about money also but my Dog is a jumper. He is hyper. Im terrified of being pregnant and him jumping on me... Im terrified of him playing rough with me and the baby...
So girlies with doggies how is your dog handling it?

I think the same thing because Casey is so hyper ....I think when the time comes we will really have to lay down the law with her. I don't know what we will do....

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
Have you looked into some training for your dog? We hired someone for dog training before I was PG because my dog was a jumper and I was embarrased when people would come to visit. I felt like a bad mommy Although it was expensive...it was well worth it. He still jumps and gets excited when new people come to visit...but he calms down very quickly and is much more mellow (he is now 2 years old).
I was definitely concerned about how he would be around the baby...but he's been so good. Look...you can see him laying in the background while DD is doing some tummy time

OMG both of them
We did put rudy in doggie school at pet smart. They were good at teaching him to "sit" and "lay down" But he already new that stuff. I just have to control the jumping part. Im so embarrased too when people come over im always apologizing. My best friend told me she hates to come over cause he jumps all over here. I guess the expierence I had at the last training is just giving me the idea that there is no hope! I guess this is really what I have to do though. I get a real trainer.

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
There were a few things the trainer taught/showed us. Again, I felt the money spent on private lessons was well worth it in the end compared to the pet store type classes. My sister didn't want to watch my dog when I went away for the weekend because she said he was too "wild". After the training...she said, if she had known he would be this calm, she would have watched him.
Good luck Kristin!

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
My dog is only 4 lbs the most... so she isn't much of a threat.. but she is verrrrrrrrrrrry attached to me. We don't know what she is going to do once the baby is here. She is extremely loveable and mild manored but she is all over me and we were worried would be all over the baby... so did train her not to enter the baby's room. We just don't think it's a good idea. They can be trained...don't let that hold you back. If there is hope for my little yorkie there is hope for yours.

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
This had been a concern of ours, but our parents have made even more comments about making me think everyone thinks our dog is crazier than we already thought he was. We have a 90lb jumper! (see avatar pic) We have baby gates up now because we have to keep him in the kicthen a lot because he's so hyper, if we can't watch him every minute he's out, he gets into loads of trouble (he's only 9months though, so a lot of puppy behavior still). We're going to put up another gate to the babies room for when the dog is out of the kitchen, and when the baby is out of his room, the dog will have to be in the kitchen, unless they can be 100% supervised.
All that being said, every dog i different. Some dogs inately understand that this is an important, fragile little person who should be protected and not messed with. Some dogs just think they're someone else to play with. You have to wait and see and supervise the reactions.

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
my boxer is a jumper bigtime!!!! He jumped on me maybe twice during my PG, so far. Dr said the dog cannot harm the baby. You'd be surprised how the dogs know you have a baby in your belly and how mushy they become. My dogs follow me like crazy and my american bulldog is always checking up on me, LOL. Im more afraid of my 5 cats jumping and hurting the baby than a dog-

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
Definitely get the dog in some training NOW and learn to "discipline" the jumping NOW. Waiting until your are PG or a/the baby arrives is way too late!
Best of luck!

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
How old is your dog? My dog used to be hyper-active and a jumper when she was younger. She's mellowed out a lot since she was about 2.5 years. (She's 6 now.)
We did curb her jumping by not paying attention to her. When she jumped to greet us, we turned our backs and told her to sit. She caught on that we won't pay attention to her until she sits nicely. The same principle applies for other behaviors. Give her lots of attention for good behavior and minimal attention for bad behaviors (say "no" and don't cuddle her right after, etc). Does that make sense?
If you think you need professional help, I'd look into advanced lessons or private lessons.

Re: Doggies and pregnancy...
Ebony is pretty mellow so I am not too worried. I think Rudy would have to take some training classes like others here have suggested. Don't let that hold you back tho, if you are ready to TTC go for it!!
