Dogs and winter weather - need advice....
Figured there are plenty of you who have been there, done that with dogs in the winter, so I pose my question for you.
We bought an oil that gets stirred in her food once a day that helps shine her coat, and helps with dry skin, but Daisy still has severe dry skin on her tummy and she's been itching herself a lot more lately. You can see the white dry skin and I want to rub lotion on her, but I know not to do this cause she will lick it off and it won't be good for her.
What do the rest of you do? I don't want to bathe her and have her get more dried out.

The dry skin can be caused by several factors including grooming. I would stop putting the oil as it will only serve to irritate, especially when she licks. Oatmeal shampoo is the best to use to bathe dogs. But before you do anything, I would take her to the vet for a skin scaping.

Anyone else?
We do use an oatmeal shampoo and the oil was recommended by the vet, but it is helping give her a shiny coat, not so much with the dry skin though.

How often do you shampoo? This could be it.
Dogs, esp those under a year or so, are not supposed to be bathed too often. As pups, I only bathed my dog every 6 weeks. Now as adults, they only get baths about once a month. Yes they get dirty but I rather have a dirty dog than a dry skinned dog. LOL

Double check with your vet - there was a woman at my vet while I was waiting one time who had a dry skin/itching problem with her dog and she was picking up meds for the dog. She was raving about how it totally cleared up the dog's dry skin. Maybe you could ask your vet about it.

We haven't bathed her in a long time. Only when she gets groomed, which is about every 6-8 weeks.

Thanks, I'll see what they say.

Ok that's not it. Def check with vet. I have never seen dry skin on my dogs.

Is she on the carpet a lot? I heard this can cause dry skin as well. If the carpet has ever been professional cleaned, it could be from the chemical they used.

She sleeps with us, lays on the couch, on her blanket, and she plays on the carpet, wood floor and tile floor.
Our carpets are new as of Jan. '07, and all they ever have been is vacuumed.

We give Dottie an Omega-3 fish oil pill every day. We purchased it from Doctors Foster & Smith. It's helped tremendously!
This is it:

When we got Annie she had very dry flakey skin. We got special shampoo at the vet and use it weekly. No dry skin!
