Dogs on vacation...Long
Here's a strange question. Some background: DH and I were going to go to NC and visit some friends in November, but that isn't going to happen now cuz of my mother. We were planning on bringing the dog cuz our friends suggested it and she has seperation anxiety and gets sick if we aren't around for a few days. DH's parents are snowbirds - they have a house on a lake in CT and a house in Florida. We have brought the dog to the house on the lake many, many times.
So, we were talking yesterday and I said that maybe we could just drive down in Jan/Feb and visit friends then go to Florida and visit his parents. He tells me that he doesn't think his parents will want the dog in their house. When I said that they have no problem with her in CT, why would they have a problem in Florida - he said he just didn't think they would like it. So, I suggested we just ask them and he got all weird.
Do you think we should ask or just go on DH's gut? If we don't bring her, then we can't go for a two week vaca cuz she won't eat and has diarrhea when we are gone.

I would ask...I mean they don't have a problem you bringing the dog to one house, but they might with another? that sounds a little weird. Hopefully they say yes, that way it saves you the stress of knowing that your dog will be sick without you.

Re: Dogs on vacation...Long
Well - personally I would probably ask... and then start a fight. But I'm one to shoot first and ask questions later.
Soooo... my advice would be the opposite of what I would do. If he got weird, then something is up. Maybe the house in Florida is nicer or newer than the one in CT and they don't want the dog there, maybe their neighbors are jerks in FLA and they don't want to start something, who knows.
Hey - could it be that they didn't like having the dog in CT the last time you brought her? Maybe it has nothing to do with location -
It could be a million things...
thats so sad she gets sick... Misty is a sweetheart

Re: Dogs on vacation...Long
Is there any way DH knows something and is hesitant to tell? It sounds very odd that they have changed their minds all of a sudden, just due to location.
If he truly doesn't know, I think he should ask but it sounds like he feels very uncomfortable asking. Maybe his mom hinted already at this no no.
Otherise, I see no harm in asking but I think I would be offended if my ILs said no to my family member doggie (providing no one has allergies or something like that).

i would bring it up like this. next time youre talking to dhs parents say "so were driving down to NC to visit friends! yeah, we were thinking of then going to visit you guys, but we'll have misty with us"
and wait for an invitation. if it doesnt come i guess youll know.

It sounds to me like maybe DH's parents might not be as comfortable about Misty visiting in CT as you think- it's likely they've said something to DH. If DH doesn't want to bring it up, then leave it at that and accept the fact that you can't have the type of vacation that you want.
Sometimes it's really hard being a dog owner.
