Donating Clothing Questions: Where To? & Is It A Tax Write-Off?
Trying to purge our closets in our tiny apartment a bit .... and I thought donating stuff that is still in good condition but we don't wear anymore would be a nice thing to do, and make me feel better about not wanting to throw out
Two questions:
1) Any recommendations on where to donate to? So far mostly, its old shoes of mine that never really fit well or ended up being too high a heel for my bad back/bad knees ... but I am SURE we'll have clothing to add to the pile ...
I'd like a place that will pick up from our house if possible, and won't harass us with calls in the future (ideally )
2) Are there tax benefits for making the donation? Should we keep track of what we'd be donating?

I pack them out and bring them to good will so I can get a receipt. They will mark down how many bags or boxes you drop off. I can't remember what our accountant deducts for each bag - maybe $50. Technically you can only deduct what the items sold for but there's no way of knowing for sure so it's just an estimate.

I read something that this year, you can't just estimate and use a receipt. That you need PICS of each item, and calculate what its value is now, and then a receipt, otherwise you risk being audited.
I always used to guesstimate and keep my receipts, but this year I won't take that chance if they woudl really want to know EVERY item that I donated (which is usually a LOT).

You can donate them to the Junior League of Long Island. They are located in Roslyn, NY.

That sounds like a real PITA.
Pictures I can understand I guess (and w/ a digital camera it wouldn't be hard to do), but how do I calculate the value of a no-name shirt or pair of shoes???

I donate to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I leave the bags by the front door and they pick 'em right up. They leave a form where I estimate the value.

That's what we do...As far as the donation being a write off...BB/BS leaves you a card so for a receipt and you fill in the $$ amount. I just did our taxes and it didn't say anything about pictures or value. Just when was the donation made and for how much. As long as you aren't trying to claim $1000 in donations, it's fine.
