Don't know what to do with my hitter

So my almost 5 yr old continues to put his hands on his siblings and he just jabbed me in the back of the hip with his Nerf gun (correction what used to be his nerf gun). I swear I saw stars.

I asked him to throw out the empty paper towel roll so his brother doesn't eat it. I held out my hand for him to hand it over I turned my back and BAM the kid hits me. I told him he loses ANOTHER friends party tomorrow morning. DH thinks I'm being too harsh and that he is too young to put his actions together with the consequence tomorrow. I disagree. Any suggestions how to handle this kid. He doesn't hit friends or at school it's mainly immediate family.

I hear you - I am going through similar discipline issues with my dd. Time outs don't seem to working, taking things away doesn't work either. It's so frustrating.
