The rebuttal was good. She hit right where he needed to be hit - take a look at the GUY in those marriages that supposedly fail because the woman is a career woman. I love how one sided all his evidence and studies were. Chat Icon

I personally love the statement that the divorce rate is lower when the wife stays at home. However, he fails to recognize that this is so, in many instances, because the wife does not feel she has the wherewithal to leave her husband. Moreoever, once she does get divorced, she will likely become a "working girl" out of necessity.

This guy's article is just plain stupid.

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

If you want a good marriage marry a guy who isn't a good for nothing lazy azz who isn't afraid of adapting, learning something new, working hard or a challenge.

I need my partner to be able to keep up with me, and so does DH.

I agree.

On the flip side, that's why I never "lived" with anyone before I got married. I didn't need help paying the bills and well, if he wanted me then anti-up with a date and a ringChat Icon

If I could support myself why would I cook, clean, pay the bills and co-habitate with someone with no strings attached? I spent enough years cleaning up and cooking for my Dad and brother.

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

There definition of a career woman is

For our purposes, a "career girl" has a university-level (or higher) education, works more than 35 hours a week outside the home and makes more than $30,000 a year.

Honestly, I think most of us on here qualify for this category. I think it's a bunch of crock.

According to this:

highly educated people are more likely to have had extra-marital sex (those with graduate degrees are 1.75 more likely to have cheated than those with high school diplomas.)

I'm going to cheat, divorce, and/or alcoholism, clinical depression and suicide, increased rates of cancer, stroke, and sexually-transmitted disease.

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

While the article may be stupid and should or should not have been published, are we disagreeing about the empirical data or the fact that someone published it?

Of course I disagree with the overall premise of the article but that's my opinion. Research was obviously done on the subject and the results came back as follows: With 2 career adults (in this case women) as head of household, a marriage is more likely to fail. Not definitely will fail, but more likely. Some of the points are indeed arguable, some are not. It's up to us, as career women, to control the controllables in our own individual relationships and make sure our own marriages do not adhere to the expectations set forth in the article.

I disagree with the article because uses certain statistics to support its arguments that I do not believe can be viewed in a vacuum.

1. There are a few more assumptions that it makes that I do believe are biased. For example, it states that the cause of a "dirty house" is the woman's choice to work outside the home.

2. It also does not give any credence to the fact that many couples have no choice but to have both spouses work outside the home.

3. The article seems to focus on women having "extra marital affairs" at work, but does not address men's extramarital affairs. Isn't there a ton of studies on the fact that men will cheat because they are bored with their wives?

The article was very one-sided. I am sure there are equally damaging studies that look at the status of working men/SAHW.

The article seems to promote an "allegory of the cave" situation: don't let your wife work, because that will expose her to the world and she may leave you.

Like I said earlier, I think it is just a stupid article.

Sorry this is long and a bit scatterbrained, but I hate seeing stuff like this. It is just another slam against working women who have it tough enough already. One step ahead, two steps back...

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

I would like to see circulation data of Forbes. I always felt that its audience of regular readers were highly affluent businessmen in which case, this article makes a lot of sense. I would simply like to see the break down of how many men vs. women either regularly read or subscribe to this magazine.

You bring some very valid and well stated points. That's one thing I forgot to mention in my post: 1) Most statistical data can be manipulated to validate and author's point and 2) Many of the cases against a woman working can also be said about career-men. It's because women have only recently (last 30 years or so) invaded the career arena that articles like this are still written.

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

I agree with the article to a degree. The dynamics of marriage are very different for our generation than the were for our parents. With the woman going to work everyday and affording her own things, the need to feel dependent on a husband, has been minimized. many years ago wives stayed with their adultering, loser husbands because of the fact they were dependent on their husbands to support them because they lacked an education or substantial employment. This is no longer the case for our generation. In addition, because of the fact that both husband and wife work...who cooks dinner? who takes care of the kids? Who does the laundry? things still need to get done but there is minimal time left to do it. i think this is also something that the current generation faces that previous ones did not. I think the new dynamics of marrige faced by our generation have led to an increase in the divorce rate. I have to somewhat agree with the article ladies. JMHO

Now let me go call my DH to tell him he has to do the laundry before he goes to his concert tonight!!!Chat Icon

Re: Don't Marry a Career Woman!!!

I think both authors have points which are going to be either applauded or boo'd by opposing sides of the argument. I don't happen to agree with the male authors words but that is because it goes against everything my relationship is based on. I do agree with what was stated on here about our generation being very different from our parents and think what he wrote is a step backward and not forward. However, that's the beauty of free speech in this country. It makes you really think about things and causes a stir. Pretty entertaining article if you don't take offense at what was written. JMHO.
