Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
I, along with thousands of drivers from LI, Queens and Brooklyn, were delayed getting to work today because a truckdriver did not understand what "NO COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC" meant on the sign to the Jackie Robinson Parkway. The vehicle was not able to get under an overpass in Kew Gardens.
I realize that there are qualifications one must have to hold this position such as a specialized license. However, I guess they missed the day in truck driver school that tells how to plan a route. Knowing the height of a vehicle would also come in handy.
I have seen this happen so many times before and it paralyzes traffic for miles in either direction on any given day. This guy was very lucky - he didnt actually hit the overpass. I have seen trucks look like the top of sardine cans when they dont think about the heights of their trucks. Frankly, it is dangerous and when someone does that, I feel a heavy fine should be instilled and possible jailtime. It is so negligent.
Sorry for the rant - needed to get this off my chest.

What I don't get is how they don't know the rule Parkways = no trucks
Is it the first time these drivers have been in new york? And even if it is, read the signs, morons!

Re: Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
Gotta share a funny story:
When I first moved to Long Island my dad rented a U-Haul and we got the directions to Hofstra off of their website.
Well, our U-Haul was a 12 footer, even though we were supposed to get a 9 footer.
We got to the Belt Parkway and saw the signs that no vehicles over 11 feet allowed.
We had NO IDEA where else to go, so we wound up driving around somehow until we got to the Southern State.
We DID see signs for "No commercial vehicles" but we didn't think a U-Haul was a commerical vehicle, so we kept going.
As you know, the SS has all those little overpasses - 11 feet, 9 feet, 8 feet.
At the first couple ones we literally closed our eyes and prayed that we would be able to make it through.
Then so many people started honking at cursing at us, that we realized we must be doing something wrong.
So at EACH overpass, we had to get off of the SS, and then get back on after the overpass.
It was the longest trip EVER!!!

Re: Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
I feel your pain. This happens all the time on the northern state at the LIE connection. There must be at least 20 signs (even the one with the truck and the big red mark over it) and yet they always seem to ignore them.
But you do raise a good question. Dont these drivers have a route to follow?

Yes, I agree that they should be able to read.... but I think LI is one of the only places that have height restrictions on parkways.... a Robert Moses "feature" to keep city buses out of his parks... Drivers who have been driving for decades everywhere but LI have never had to worry about height on major highways.
Still, it comes back to what you said... "read the signs, morons!"

Re: Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
He's clearly not an experienced driver. As the daughter of a former truck driver for the NYC Metro area, you need to know the height of your truck and where you can and cannot drive it. Also, you need to know multiple routes in the area when planning your route to avoid congestion and account for bad weather/accident delays.

Is this a standardized rule across the US, or only in NY?
I might have 15% of forgiveness if it was a new truck driver that never hauls to NY....

Re: Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
this happens in my little town here in nj. the main road of the town, which is main street, is a 2-way street which includes going under the elevated train tracks. stupid truck drivers that get stuck under there block the main artery of the town and back of traffic forever! it's rediculous!

Hate that! It happen all the time on the Northern State by me. What kills me is that the LIE and Northern State cross over at that point, so what are they doing on the NSP anyway!

Is it the first time these drivers have been in new york? And even if it is, read the signs, morons! And with the new GPS systems that many companies use, it tells them which roads will accomodate bigger trucks if they program it that way. FBIL is a truck driver, and it is his BIGGEST pet peeve when he sees a semi sardine-canned on the side of the road.

Only expressways in NY. It is because of how the bridges are built. There are other states too, but all states have signs on their highways of the height restrictions.

Re: Dopey truck driver (rant - beware)
This reminds me of the joke where a cop asks a truck driver 'Stuck under the bridge?' and the driver says 'nope, I was delivering this here bridge and I ran out of gas'

The problem is that in other states truck drivers can drive on parkways without the height and weight restrictions (i.e. Garden State Parkway) so they don't realize when they get in NY and especially LI, that these problems are going to occur.

I know the rule here, but I don't know that rule is across the US, so I don't know how drivers from Utah for example are supposed to know it. Of all the entries into NY, I've only seen one sign on one street, I can't even remember what road it's on. You would think they would put it at every NY crossing and border.

Exactly. You'd think they would put it on the 'welcome to NY' sign for each county on each road going into the state. No, that would make too much sense.
