Dottie's Home - Updated with new pics

We brought our newest family member home on Christmas Eve.

Her name is Dottie and she's a 9 month old Cairn Terrier.
We love her so much. Even though we've only had her a few days, I can't imagine my life without her.

We are trying to crate train her. She gets really excited when she sees us and pees. I'm hoping she'll grow out of that. Anyone have any experience with that?

Such a cutie! Katie used to pee when you pet her, it's a submissive thing. Don't scold her when it happens.
Katie grew out of it.

How is Dottie doing?

She's doing great!
Because she's 9 months old already, the vet instructed us to take away the crate and wee wee pads and just train her to go outstide. She's doing GREAT!!
Only a couple of small accidents in her area. Other than that she's totally getting into a routine.

As for the excited peeing, she's not doing that as much. Still a little drip here and there, but nothing like the first day we had her home.

She's lovable and really SMART.

We are so in love with her!

ETA: We took her to the groomers and got her a puppy cut. As if she could get any cuter. I'll post pics when I get them uploaded.

she is s cutie, my dog used to pee when we came home from work and she had been crated all day, She would get so excited and pee....she grew out of that relatively quickly

A good thing to do is not to make a big deal when you walk in the door. Don't even say hi to her, let her right outside to do her thing...good luck Chat Icon

Re: Dottie's Home

my stepdaughter has a cairn at her mom's house. it is about 4 years old now & still has accidents in the house, but I think its because they weren't strict with the training. They have to be super careful about her getting outside w/o her leash to because she runs right into the street to chase cars.
I bought my stepdaughter a book on cairns to try to give her ideas about training & it said you have to be really consistant & firm with them-as with most dogs.
Good luck with her, she's cute.

Many small dogs have "happy pee" it might go away after being fixed, but if not there are behavioural treatments for it. It can be a "fight or flight" type reaction. 2 of my smallest dogs had that. One gets reaaly excited & would pee when new company came. It stopped after she was fixed. My chihuahua we are getting training for it b/c it has not stopped.

My dog did that as a pup. He never does it anymore. we read that you should not pay a lot of attention when you first see her. Do not say hello or be affectionate. Just take her outside. Thena fter she pees do all of your positive reinforcement and greeting.
