Douglaston and Port Washington LIRR line
This week, our search for a short commute that won't break the bank takes us to Douglaston.
Anyone live there? What can you share about what it's like to live in the area? How's the Port Washington LIRR branch -- how crowded does the train get?
thanks!

Re: Douglaston and Port Washington LIRR line
Don't live in Douglaston, but in Bayside. I do know that Douglaston is a very nice area and the school district is excellent(26 is the best in the city). A lot shopping and some great Italian restaurants(Aunt Bella and Giardanos).
I catch that train in Bayside. Gotta say it really isn't bad. The train is rarely late, crowded- yes(but never standing room only).
Hope that helps.

Re: Douglaston and Port Washington LIRR line
I live in Great Neck, but pick up the train in Little Neck, one stop further down the line. I agree, it does get crowded, but you don't wind up standing that often. It is very rarely late, and the trains run often, which is a plus if you miss the one you wanted to take.
Douglaston seems to be nice. There are some restaurants and shops, plus a nice trail by the water which isn't that far away. DH and I bike ride along a road that runs by the water in Douglaston sometimes--some lovely houses there!
I don't know much about the schools in Douglaston, so I can't help you there. Good luck!

I took that line to Bayside for years. Never had a major problem. Douglaston is really nice and the SD is good.

Re: Douglaston and Port Washington LIRR line
My husband is from there Beautiful nieghborhood--very expensive houses though If you buy a house in the Manor, you cannot change anything inside or outside the house without permission because it is considered a hisorical neighborhood My DH went to private schools, not the public ones so I am unsure about the school district

I live in Manhasset and the train line is great. Douglaston looks really pretty from the train. Good luck in your search!

I lived in Bayside and was on that train line and I have to say that I miss that line so much. Nothing compares to it.
We have family in Douglaston and they love it. They have actually said that they will never move.

Re: Douglaston and Port Washington LIRR line
I live in Little Neck and take the LIRR from there. If you're getting on at Bayside, you do have the problem of potentially standing but Douglaston and before is fine. I always get a seat on the ride home. The great part of the line is that it is the only one that does not go through Jamaica, which is where so many LIRR issues are concentrated. The bad part is that there are not that many trains. In the morning I have three options - 7:23, 7:55 and 8:07. But the ride, on an express, is only about 23-25min from Douglaston.
