Re: downs syndrome blood test?
I did! With my first - its part of the AFP test. Its very common to get a false postive - I found this out after I freaked out myself. However the only way to be sure is an amnio - which I did not opt to do.

Re: downs syndrome blood test?
There are false positives. The doctor also may have a policy of calling her to tell her the results. I know its harder said than done, but she should try to calm down until she knows there is something to worry about. Good luck!

the doctor calling does not necessarily mean bad news. good news vibes are going out to your friend.

Re: downs syndrome blood test?
My OB's office leaves a message requesting me to call them back no matter what the results are.
And I had the blood test for the UltraScreen, which includes a detailed sonogram.

Re: downs syndrome blood test?
I posted on the Parenting board that I had the same result for Down's. You said that her sonogram measurements were within normal range? Evidently, and I found this out afterwards, the nuchal translucency # is the most important piece to the Ultrascreen puzzle (sonogram, 12 week, 16 week blood tests). If this is normal there's a very good chance of everything else being fine. I don't know if this is the same for Trisomy 18, but it's true of Down's.

The false positive thing happened to me too. My doctor called me at work to tell me that my blood levels were high and that I was at high risk for a down's syndrome baby. But my chances were 1 in 241, not as high as your friends 1-5 trisomy. I am so sorry that your friend has to go through this. I can imagine how she must be feeling. DH and I decided to have the amnio done, just to be sure because we could not go on wondering for the rest of the pregnancy. It would have driven me nuts and waiting for the results was the hardest part for me. Thank God the results came back normal, but it's a very agonizing thing to go through.
The only thing you can do for your friend is just be there for her, whether it's a shoulder to lean or for you to just listen to her if she wants to talk.
to your friend. Keep us posted on how she is doing.
