Downs test questionfor friend

Friend just told me that at her 8 week appt she was given option to test for downs with amnio. Is this something knew? Ive only heard of this if the results come back wth a chance not offered at 8 weeks (im assuming maybe for 12 week apt but not sure)

How old is she?
My Dr started discussing the amnio as an option pretty much from the beginning-I was 35.
He discussed it as an option- didn't push me one way or the other but just explained things so I could make my own decision when the time came

Does she have family with downs or some other mental disability? I know my Uncles wife went through a lot of testing bc her sister had Down's syndrome. But from what I've seen since my first DC to now, there's less testing for women under 35, I wasn't even offered the NT sono this time, I had to ask for it.

Amnio is not done til later (14-16 weeks).

You can do a CVS earlier (10-12 weeks)

First, they would typically do a non-invasive blood test fetal DNA snp screen (blood tests like Maternity 21, etc) or a triple screen & NT.

I think your friend got confused.

Yeah 30 seems young for them to even suggest it without some history of something

I know its very strange but she said she went today (8 weeks 1 st visit) and asked of she wanted the amnio and she declined. She hs no downs history.

Is she sure they said amnio and not the NT scan?

Sounds like the Maternit 21 or similar test. This is a non invasive blood test. They would def offer this before an amnio. I heard they are offering these non invasive blood tests to everyone now not just high risk women.
