Drama at work-whaddya think?

Well I wor at a Real Estate company. I am sort of a manager(I can't hire or fire but I am responsible for making sure a group of people perform certain tasks) and I am not a real estate agent. That said here is an argument that happened at work today:
Me: (walking through a shared lunchroom between two offices) Wow it stinks in here, what is that?
Someone else: Fish
Crazy Girl: You're just as ignorant as he is how could you be walkin in here saying someones lunch stink. You just ignorant
M: (Very taken aback) I guess you shouldn't bring fish to eat at work if you don't want comments about the smell(leave room to enter other office-gone 15 mins)
M: (walk back in)
CG: You a moron. You an idiot. How you be tallkin about what people are eating for lunch and sh!t.
M: Ok whatever. You are at work try to keep it professional.
CG: Blah blah blah
M: One more word so and so(Kind of threatening her here that I will complain about her)
CG: yeah just what you gonna do about it
M(walk out and sit at desk)

After this she preceded to gibve me the evil eye which I responded to with a sweet smile.
I told my boss and her boss. I also e-mailed her boss so there is a record. I have to go back to that ofc on Thursday and she will probably have words for me again. what is the proper response? TIA

I think what you said was kind of rude to the person eating the fish but unless there's a policy about heating up food or not eating certain foods in the office there's not much to do except set up that policy. The crazy girl should calm down though -- she made her point and should have dropped it. That is no way to speak to anyone in the office - manager or not. If she was eating the fish I would apologize. And either way, I would tell her to mind the way she speaks to co-workers. It's a professional office with I presume potential clients around -- she needs to act accordingly.

Re: Drama at work-whaddya think?

does she report to you? if so, that was insubordination...i mean, i guess i could see her point but if that were me personally and someone told me my lunch stinks, I would joke about it...sense of humor, you know? the way she responded was not right. You did the right thing by making a note of it....she's sounds like the ignorant one!

Re: Drama at work-whaddya think?

Thank you all. I was very taken aback by the way she responded. She doesn't answer to me but even by common courtesy rules this was out of line IMO. Just like MrsTC said, I probably would have made a joke of it too. Thanks for the advice. I'll see what happens on Thursday I'll keep you updated

I agree don't you think this is a little unbalanced? I really don't think what I said was out of line. It was no directed at her or personal just a general statement that something smelled and what it was. Bottom line if she says one word to me on Thursday I am going to make a BIG deal about it and make a formal complaint to the HR dept.

I do think what you said was a little out of line, although I realize that you didn't mean it that way. If someone made a comment that my food smelled I woudl think that it was very rude. I assume that you didn't realize it was her food when you made the comment.

But her reaction was definitely not balanced. She had every right to say something, but not in the way that she did. She definitely overeacted.

Re: Drama at work-whaddya think?

No I didn't realize it was her food. I am a very outspoken person-I personally would NEVER get offended if someone said they smelled strong food and it happened to be mine. Thanks for all the comments.

She already got crazy on you, forget about feeling sorry for how she migt have taken it. Tell her its not the fish that smelled it was her !
We joke in my place about food all the time. I just dont personally think you did anything wrong by commenting on food UNLESS you walked into your inlaws house and said "Man it stinks in here whatcha cooking!" Forget this girl...she needs to RELAX!
