Dream Home - sorry kinda long

DH and I recently made an offer on a house and we are waiting to hear if anything works out with the seller . . . in the meantime, I can't get this one house out of my head. It's my dream home. But its about $100K out of our price range. Here's the story - It's been on the market for 226+ days. It is a gut renovation by a young Manhattanite couple who thought they wanted to move to the burbs . . . and want out. So, they thought they would be living there and the reno is top notch. I'm hoping maybe there is an angle for making an offer we hadn't thought of.

ETA: it's 4 bed, 2 bath. sorry.

It originally sold in 08 for $325.

You never know what can happen-- but it's hard when you find something you love. Keep the faith! You'll find something you love-- whether it be this house, or another.

Thanks everyone. I think I've been watching this house for 226+ days, haha. I don't want to be uncomfortable with a home payment or not able to sleep at night.

Edited to remove MLS#!

it's gorgeous.. but Chat Icon Chat Icon and if you add the taxes on top of that, you're going to be paying even more per month

i would concentrate on finding a home that is in the ideal neighborhood, and maybe fixing it up to make it your own so you're not paying that much up front. That's a LOT of money these days for a house..

or put an offer in at what you're comfortable paying, and see what they say... you never know!

Have you been in to see the house? I think it is odd that it doesn't show the bedrooms or the yard. Are the bedrooms small?

It is in a nice part of FP. My brother lives 2 blocks over.

You honestly have nothing to lose by making an offer. The worst they can say is no I say go for it.

Re: Dream Home - sorry kinda long

This house needs some TLC but look at the lot size - 60 x 100!

I'm not at all familiar with Floral Pk though Chat Icon

nice house but not what I was expecting.. I would do as the others said.. put in a low offer (you never know) or just look for something much less and make it your OWN dream home..

no matter what house you buy or whether or not you think it's your dream home. you will always be wanting to change something.

I didnt look at the house, but i wouldnt buy a house with all your bells and whistles. If its perfect, nothing can be done and therefore you cant really gain that much if you resell. Jmo.

Just a quick warning when you guys are discussing potential offers you may make on this (or any website):

I just saw something in a realtor publication advising agents to warn their clients that they should be careful about what they post on the internet about interest in particular homes and negotiations. There was a cautionary tale in the article about someone who totally compromised their negotiating position with a seller by posting what they would be willing to pay for a house (what they thought it was worth), even though they made a lower offer.

I would be careful about disclosing too much about what you think of a house, what your financial situation/budge is, etc. IF you are posting specifics about the house (MLS number) or have identifying information about yourself on the site. The sellers or their agent could come across this info and use it to their advantage. OR, another buyer could see your post and come in and make a higher offer. If you want advice from the boards, just try to keep it more general or FM people the specifics if you must.

This is especially true on a site like this where any member of the public can read posts (you don't have to register to view the message boards).

Sorry to be a downer, but don't want any of you to get burned, no matter how small the likelihood.

i agree. the inside looks nice, but im not a fan of the exterior. i dont know floral park at all, but it seems like a very expensive price for the house. we bought a house with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, every room fully updated, large yard, hardwood floors and paid a lot less than what your house is asking.

we all have our "dream homes" but we have to be able to afford them... otherwise they wouldnt be dream homes lol.

ETA: i also think there has to be a reason why it's been on the market for sooo long. they might have come down on the price in that time frame, but maybe they are really asking for too much. you need to look at the comps in the area.

I was expecting a big a$$ house, like new construction or something..

Don't get me wrong.. the house is LOVELY! but in all honesty, for that type of money, you can get so much more! Chat Icon

In Floral Park the house seems to be priced about right. Hard to compare what you can get else where for the same money.

The pictures that are there look nice but I am curious what the rest looks like. I always feel if they aren't showing pictures of certain rooms its because they are small or need work.

I would still throw out an offer if you really loved it. It isn't even with a FP realtor. Are you working with a realtor in FP? If so what is there thought on the pricing.

The area is great and we live in FP now, so we love the town. We've been to the house and physically seen it - the upstairs bedrooms are on the smaller side, but that seems to be common in this area. I also agree that the house isn't too overpriced for the location, unfortunately.

Absolutely! Not for nothing but people ARE looking for houses here on LIF. They know what you are bidding, they could go just above your offer and get the house, not you.

You also cannot compare a house from 2008 price and now if they took a fixer uppper and fixed it.

That being said, the price is out of your price range. $100K is massive!

Maybe look at a fixer upper also and make the house your own. Slowly do 1 room at a time and make it your dream home. You will have more room for negociations and you can get all those inspired designs into the fixer upper.
