Dress Codes for Jobs

What are your thoughts on dress codes? I got into a debate with someone about this recently, and I find that I get really put off when I go into a store and an employee is wearing really tight and/or skimpy clothing.

Do you think dress codes violate our freedom of expression? I don't think I am in favor of them for my profession (teacher) because I think you should want to dress in a professional manner. But then I see co workers come here looking like they just left their other jobs as go go dancers.

Some of the people at my job look like they just rolled out of bed....
Instead of "focusing" on them...they focus on those of us who wear capris with nice dress sandals and button down shirts...Chat Icon

I think that the way you dress is a reflection of you. If you dress like a slob, people will think you do sloppy work.

Re: Dress Codes for Jobs

Personally, I think some people need a very strict dress code because they take business casual as meaning dirty unpressed khakis and a button down as business casual!!

Re: Dress Codes for Jobs

I think dress codes are appropriate for most jobs. Perhaps it is narrowminded, but I identify a person's professionalism with how they present themselves. I think personal hygene should be a consideration too, but that is a whole other discussion.

Re: Dress Codes for Jobs

i work in a corparte office, but the dress code is business casual. i had a hard time "adjusting" but once i found what works, i stick to it.

we have several code breakers, and it bugs the crap out of me. we need to look professional and when you dress like you are going to a club, its hard for people to take you seriously.

i don't mind that we have a dress code, makes it easier for me

It is pretty casual around here. No jeans or tee shirts except on fridays.

In the summer, though, some of the women get crazy. Tanks tops, boobs spilling out all over the place, skirts that come up to the crotch. Chat Icon

Re: Dress Codes for Jobs

As much as I'd love to wear jeans or sweats to work, it's not appropriate. I think it's fine to have a dress code in a professional environment especially if you're meeting with clients or potential clients.

If you work at a clothing store, I don't see a problem with requiring the employees to wear the store's clothes especially if they get a discount on it.

I think you should dress according to your job. We are pretty business casual here in this office. I think dress down Friday is allowed too.

It's really sad how i get excited about dress down days, which usually happen the day before a holiday weekend. I'm glad our office is business causal and not formal, but it's still great to be able to wear something more comfortable once in a while to work.

I always break the no open toe shoe rule in the late spring. We are allowed to have it in the summer, just not the spring.

Re: Dress Codes for Jobs

I don't really agree with them, but I know that its done because people will take way too much liberty. My office is "business casual" no jeans ever, not even on friday. It stinks because I would like to dress more casually, we just sit at a computer all day, we don't ever see any clients. I know if I could wear jeans, I would really dress them up, but there are people who would take it too far and wear ripped jeans and ratty t-shirts, so I guess thats why a dress code is in place.

It's contractually illegal in NYC for teachers to have a dress code, but some people do abuse it- I was embarrassed for a co-worker when our superintendent was in the building and he made a comment about how sloppy this guy looked.

Also, for teachers, I have found that kids respond so much better when they have someone in front of them who looks neat. Our kids have to wear uniforms, and like I said, I can't believe how some people come to work.

I agree... also a teacher.

When I worked in Catholic school I had to wear skirts and only skirts. I worked there from 93-96 and we had some terribly cold winters.

I always joke with my students that's why they never see me in a skirt... I had my fill. Chat Icon

This is so funny to me, because I wear jeans almost every day to work, because of the type of work I do. I do have to look neat, though, because I do have meetings to go to at times. I find it difficult to dress sometimes, in clothes that look somewhat professional, but that are practical. And now, I am so sick of wearing jeans, that I usually don't wear them on the weekends!

Let me tell you, for the most part, I don't think anyone in my building needs a dress code in order to show up to work appropriately, but for those few that DO need it, I thank god we have it!Chat Icon

We have to wear suits to work. And, as expensive as it is to keep up with my wardrobe, I like it. And some co-workers still manage to look sloppy, so I can only imagine what they'd look like if they were allowed to wear whatever they wanted!
