Drinking water

Do you give your baby water to drink every day or just when you think they are hot and need it? The doctor never really said anything to me about just giving him water but I am thinking I am giving him enough. Not to be gross, but his pee in his diaper has been very dark the past few days... Doesnt that mean he may not be getting enough fluids?
Thanks

They say that babies do not need water until they are a year old and that formula/breast milk provides them with enough to hydrate them but I gave my son water when he was around 3-4 months old.

I only give the baby water when he gets the hiccups. But he's only 9 weeks old.

Re: Drinking water

I've given water to Jared but he makes the funniest face and then spits it out. I guess he's not used to it.

(His diaper has also been a little dark too.)

Isn't that face hilarious?!! It's like he's saying "ew mommy what is THIS crap?!" I have to try and catch it with the camera one of these days. I ROTFL when he does that!

How dark is it? And has anything else in his diet changed? Also does it have a significantly stronger odor?

It has a stronger odor. But he has started eating a lot more cereal than he was before.

Re: Drinking water

In one of the books I read, it recommeded to start giving your baby water when they begin solids since it will aid in digestion.

Jack actually loves water. Some days I give him watered down juice and other days just plain water. he is 10 months old now and he's been drinking water for about 4 months.

Re: Drinking water

I just got back from Sarah's 6 month checkup and asked the doctor about water. He said she doesn't really need it, but if we are out taking a walk or something and she's hot, we can give it to her.

My dr said similar to above. She said not necessary but if outside and very hot you can give. I give a coupel ounces here and there in a sippy cup since about 6 months. Other than that if it is hot and we are outside, I give him an ice cube or some sips of water from my cup. Or when he grabs my water away from me, I give him some sips from my cup. I also gave it for constipation early on. Alone or mixed with prune juice.

I was told not to give my babies water since it's essentially empty calories - and they need as much nutrients as possible during infancy.

I was told similar that water is not needed because it will fill baby up and take place of formula/BM that has the nutrients they need where as water has nothing. But this when he was an infant.

I didn't give water until after 7 months old and it was REALLY hot out. He's now 10 months old and I try to give it in a sippy cup in the place of juice.
