Driving alone with a toddler...

on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving which option would you take

1. Leave around 11-12 in the morning after DH goes to bed (he works nights)

2. Leave around 9.30-10pm after DH leaves for work.

I've done most of this trip by myself before (here to South Jersey, we are going to Maryland) but for some reason the day is daunting...

i would leave in the morning. in Long Island - they tend to do a lot of construction during the evening hours - so you may hit a lot of closed roads!

I would SO prefer the kids to be sleeping when I drive. My SIL makes this drive a lot and she always leaves at night.
Have a safe trip for you and Christopher! Isn't you hubby spending the holiday with you guys? Or does he have to work?

I would do the afternoon trip. I am just thinking with a toddler, it might be hard to get them to go back to sleep if you go at night. But only you know C3 best - will he transfer from the car to the bed when you get there? How will he be during the car ride? Do you have a portable DVD player?

I do the morning/afternoon drive. I know i'd be so tired an hour into that night drive and I don't like driving when i'm sleepy.

Re: Driving alone with a toddler...

morning. the night before thanksgiving everyone has the same idea as you ---- if we just leave at 9:30 they'll be no traffic --- NOT, LOL. Go early so that you have a good rest the night before Turkeytime. ETA: I would leave 9:30-10:00 am though otherwise you can hit early dissmals from work in the Maryland area..

He is pretty good in the car.

No DVD playerChat Icon

Oddly enough, he may sleep in the afternoon (he naps) but not at night, last year we left like 7pm and hit a ton of traffic and got htere at midnight and he was awake..

Ugh. I'm so torn

Re: Driving alone with a toddler...

I would probably go during the day. I would feed him something and leave an hour before he would nap. This way he isn't hungry and may get tired in the car and nap for like 2 hours of the ride!!!

I would definitely do the morning. Like a previous poster said, I get too sleepy at night to do a drive like that.

Re: Driving alone with a toddler...

I would drive when DD is sleeping.

I also feel like alot of people are going to be travelling that day, during the day, so that would also be a factor that I would consider.

Re: Driving alone with a toddler...

I'd leave in the morning. Let Daddy rest, and you can beat a little of the holiday traffic. C will be cool in the car, I bet he will nap too. I just hate driving that late at night, God forbid I got a flat or something, and if there's any "weather" FORGET IT.

As long as you are ok with driving in the dark, I would leave at night.

Re: Driving alone with a toddler...

It depends - are you more of a morning person or a night person? I get tired easily at night these days so I would do the morning drive. My boys tend to fall asleep in the car, day or night. Do whichever option is safest for you and C3. Chat Icon
