driving to PA for 4th of July -- leave Thursday night or Friday morning
Anyone want to hazard a guess as to when traffic will be worse? We are currently thinking of leaving at 8 PM on Thursday night. Our other option is the crack of dawn on Friday morning. We're thinking traffic will be worse on Friday, plus we'll miss out on an entire day on the lake by only getting there midday.
Any thoughts? We're leaving from LI and going to Central PA.

I wanted to leave late thursday night for Ocean City
but since we staying in a hotel- we aren't leaving until early friday morning
so I would leave thursday- not b/c of traffic- but like you said- not to lose half the day!

Thursday Evening!
I would vote for like 9pm though... but then again, you don't want to get stuck in any night roadwork which usually starts at around 10pm or 10:30pm. So, you are probably best with 8pm!

DEFINITELY Thursday evening. we're HUGE road trippers and go to PA every weekend (for the drive-in).
You will deal with construction on Thursday night - but it will be NOTHING compared to the congestion and traffic on Friday.

Thanks all! We haven't seen my ILs since Thanksgiving and we really wanted that extra half day with them... I just wanted to be sure we weren't foolish for leaving Thursday night. Sounds like we had the right idea!

Fri AM is going to be horrendous BUT PA is going to be really dark on Thursday nite. Its up to you what you feel more comfortable with between the two. You could leave Fri AM at like 4am.

That was our other option. While we could get up that early, then we'd be dead all day Friday. We'd miss part of the day AND be exhausted the entire time.
DH grew up in PA - the dark doesn't really bother us at all.

we are going to PA also. We have a RV in a campground in north east PA. We are leaving at 11pm on thursday night, this way when we wake up friday morning we have the whole day to enjoy.
ETA - there is a great drive-in in Warwick NY.

Re: driving to PA for 4th of July -- leave Thursday night or Friday morning
I vote for early Friday morning...at around 6am-ish
My ILs are in PA & we always sat in tons of traffic when we left at night, so we've been leaving at 6am the following morning for over a year now...and have yet to hit traffic. The 3 hour ride has been taking us exactly 3 hours. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
