Drywall Rec's?

We are having a total nightmare of a time removing wallpaper for the whole freaking house Chat Icon

We have gotten a few quotes for removal and were wondering how much more it would be to just re-sheetrock...

Anyone have any reccomendations?

Re: Drywall Rec's?

There are 3+ layers in EVERY room. The first layer comes right off, but leaves the backing. The bottom layer is directly on the drywall, no primer. So, it's very hard to chip it away without damaging the heck out of the wall. Plus, it took hours to do one little section and we have 3 bedrooms, a living room and a hallway to do Chat Icon

We tried scoring and DIF, hot water, hot water and fabric softener, etc....nothing works.

Re: Drywall Rec's?

the scoring/dif method, hot water, etc...should have all helped take it off a little more easily!! Chat Icon how long do you let it soak in? maybe use a sponge and REALLY saturate the wall....that's what we did, b/c it wasn't coming off that easily either...and we had 3 layers too..in the bedroom...

this is a pic from when we were working on it...Chat Icon

Re: Drywall Rec's?

well, one wall took about 3 hours alone!!! that's the one that had 3 layers!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

the other walls weren't as bad..they only had like 2 layers....altogether, i'd say it took us about a good 5 hours. Chat Icon

Re: Drywall Rec's?

Price out 1/4 inch drywall that will definitely be easier. Have you been removing with a steamer because I found DIF didn't work AT ALL!

Re: Drywall Rec's?

we had this problem in our diningroom... 8 layers of wallpaper!!!!!!!!!!!!! we just took the sheetrock down and re did it... we did ourselves... it was messy to take down but rather inexpensive the boards only cost about $7-9 per board 4ft x 8ft. it was alittle tricky cutting some spots... if you want to spend the $$ i'd pay someone to do it, you may find it hard to find someone tape & spackle after you've done the sheetrock, thats our problem now... good luck! FM me if you have any more questions.

Re: Drywall Rec's?

A good sheetrocker is going to charge about $20 per board (for board, taping and spackling). IMO - stick with the various removal methods....sheetrocking will get pricey! It may take some time, but so does everything else when you own a house. Chat Icon

I thought so too, but we have gotten 3 quotes and they are all within a few hundred dollars of each other. That's why we wanted to get some sheetrock quotes, it seems like it would be less work!!!

Re: Drywall Rec's?

sure does...if it's going to come out costing around the same to just completely sheetrock, then i'd go that route myself.

good luck with it...i'm sure it'll turn out well. Chat Icon
