So sorry to hear it...I actually have heard that that getting outdoors is good for croup, so tomorrow try to get him outside some...
Will a vaporizer help at all?
Hope he gets well soon!

If it gets bad take him into the bathroom and turn the shower on, the steam will help him, or go outside with him, the cold air will help too!

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
DD gets croup often, When she gets up at night I run the shower in hot and sit there with her. SHe usually falls asleep on me. They get more scared of the way they sound. Try and keep him calm. It gets worse when they cry.

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
I just read going outside in the cold air is the best thing for croup. If that's not working, you can try the steam too.
I'm sorry to hear this, I hope DS is better soon.

I don't know how true this is but someone told me if you put vicks on their feet it actually helps a cough. I have never personally tried it and I don't know if there is an age restriction on vicks. Good luck. Hope he feels better soon.

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
Oh no!!!! I feel for you, Jack just had it last week and it was pretty bad.
If he wakes up and is having an attack make sure to fill the bathroom with steam to help break up the mucus. If that doesn't work bundle him up and bring him outside.
Should it get really bad and he has trouble breathing call the doc to see if they want you to bring him to the ER. Also, if by tomorrow he gets worse call the doc and ask to come in and see if he needs steriods or the nebulizer.
Hugs to all of you - hope he's better soon

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
DD has gotten croup (spasmodic croup) from her allergies a few times. The ped has me take her into the bathroom and turn the shower on hot and sit with her for about 20 mins in the steam - this usually helps some - in the cold you can then bundle them up warm and take them outside and let them breathe in the cold air this is supposed to help.
My ped also has me keep her in a smaller room with the humidifier on high for a few days, drink lots of fluids to keep any mucus loose.
Finally - sometimes he has me give her some musinex or robutussin plain (check with your ped) if she has any mucus b.c it will keep it thin and help it pass thru the area that is swollen (croup is just a swelling I think of the larynx)
Also keeping them sleeping sitting up or propped up helps.
ETD to add the sound and the stridor are VERY scary - but the things posted above really do help. My ped told me if she sees no relief (she turns white looses her voice completely and can't cry etc when she gets it) in 20-30 mins to take her to the ER. So you might want to ask your ped what to watch for - luckily we never had to go.

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
I used to get croup ALL the time when I was a baby
my parent would bring me into the bathroom, run the shower on hot and let me sit in the steam room to loosen up my chest

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
my DS has croup right now as well...
I took him to the Dr. and he gave me a mild steroid for 3 days to give him. It worked beautifully and he's much better.

Cold air works best for the croup. Keep a window cracked at night. Load up your DC's chest/throat with vicks vapor rub and keep the humidifier running.

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
Poor thing, DS had it once and it was terrible. I also agree with the cold air. Bundle him up and just sit outside for 10-15 minutes. The cold air helps contract this voice box (it's like putting ice on something swollen). The steam showers are great too. Hope he feels better soon

Re: DS has CROUP--i feel so bad--what can I do?
Thanks ladies...you guys are so great.
i gave him Motrin for his fever and kept the humidifier on for him all night. I heard him coughing at 11 and then 3 but nothing so bad. Then he woke up at 6:30. i gave him pedialyte (he also has diarhea)
My dad came to watch him this morning and I just told him to take him outside for a bit (based on the advice above)
Thanks so much!!
