DS was invited to a bday party tomorrow but he now has a runny nose and a slight temp-WWYD?

I'm not one to get crazy about kids having colds, they all have them at one time or another. DS is 19 months, he has a neighbor's 2nd bday party tomorrow at their home. I know there won't be any "babies" there, but I don't want to bring a totally sick kid either.

Should I call the mom tonight and tell her he's got a runny nose and I'll call her in the morning and let her make the call as to whether she wants him in her home? I wouldn't be offended if she said no, I would totallly understand. Or, am I making a big deal over a runny nose and just bring him so long as he has no temp whatsover?? Or not give her a heads up tonight, just call her in the morning and let her decide? Chat Icon

WWYD?

I just put DS to bed and I have a feeling he's not going to be any better by morning. No fever, but he's stuffy now on top of the runny nose so I'm going to keep him home tomorrow. I'm just bummed because we just moved to this town a few months ago and this is the first "friend" in the neighborhood bday party for us, so I was really looking forward to it for DS's sake. Oh well. I think you should wait until tomorrow to see how he seems, then decide. But I guess a call to the mom to let her know wouldn't be a bad idea.

Runny nose - questionable. Is it the start of something or has it been around for a while with no other sick issues? If it just started and you are not sure where it is going then I would err on the side of caution. Any fever and I would keep away from a party for at least 24 hrs.

One thing I wanted to say though - it makes me NUTS when parents call and leave it up to me whether or not their child can come if they are exhibiting sick symptoms. I think it is a very unfair position to put the host of kids party in. On the one hand it is SO hard to tell a parent not to bring their kid but, on the other hand, you have a responsibility to all the other parents not to have a sick kid infect their child. It's a lose-lose situation and very unfair question for the host IMO. I think - if you have to ask, the child should stay home. Also, only you really know how sick your child is.

Well if it was just a runny nose I would just ask the mom and say you are thinking of keeping your DC home and see what she wants you to do - but the title of your post you say your DC has a slight temperature. If they had a temperature this afternoon they are contagious until they haven't had a temperature for a full 24 hours and I would say definitely stay home. I would not be happy if someone brought a child with a temperature to my DC's birthday party.

Thank you for your honesty. I just spoke with my best friend and she said the same exact thing about putting the host mom in an awkward position and I totally agree. Chat Icon

If my DS had a fever I would keep him home Chat Icon Chat Icon Just a runny nose--if it's on its way to getting better we would go, if it's new we probably would skip, but that's just me.

I think if he has a fever and a runny nose then he should stay home. Even though kids get colds, I don't think any parent really appreciates their kid getting one. You shouldn't leave it up to the mom, you should make the decision. She may feel uncomfortable telling you not to bring him. Besides, there may be other parents there who would be uncomfortable with their child playing with a child who is sick. JMO.

I would wait to see how he looks, sounds, feels tomorrow. Kids can be "sick" one minute and fine the next.

My rule is 24 hours without a fever before I take DD anywhere.
