DS will be 14 months on Saturday and...
He still doesn't say anything. He says mama but it sounds like more of a sound that he makes. I don't think he's directly calling me.
He's starting to learn how to understand things. Like he waves bye bye when you tell him, and blows kisses and claps his hands and all that but in terms of speaking he doesn't say anything. When I should be concerned or have him evaluated? Is anyone going through the same thing with their DC's...

My nephew is 14 months also and he does not say much except for dada. He waves and claps hands too but all he says is dada. Sometimes he says mama but very rarely. I would not worry about it. All children are different.

I think most doctors tell you to wait to get evaluated until they are 18 months

I know. I just thought that at this age they were supposed to know a few words. My son refuses to say Dada. If you say "Say dada" he gets mad and goes "mama"...it's actually kind of funny the way he does it. What he has been doing lately is looking at books. During the day I show him this book with colors and I point to them. So whenever he sees this book he'll start opening the pages and look up at me as if to say that he wants me to point to the colors. Then later on his own when noone says anything to him he'll open the book babble and just point...

He will be fine. My niece did not say much until she was over 2 years old (she is 29 months now) and she has just started talking a lot to the point where we can understand her.

2 of my friends have had their little boys in therapy for speech because they were not saying much and now one is 5 and the other is 3 and they talk too much...
My friend with the 5 year old got her son evaluated when he was 2. So I guess all I can do is wait and maybe get him evaluated at 18 months...

My niece was evaluated twice and they kept telling my sister since she says a few words and understands when someone talks to her and she could not get the therapy. So my sister has been helping her at home and now she does not stop talking.

Re: DS will be 14 months on Saturday and...
My DD only said like 4 words at her 15 month checkup (and even those were questionable). The ped said if she didn't say 6 words at the 18 month checkup they would consider some type of early intervention. But around her 16 or 17 month, all of a sudden something "clicked" and by her 18 month appt she could say 25 words.
I would say don't worry unnecessarily, especially since he's a boy and they say boys sometimes start speaking later. Just keep doing what you're doing, your doctor will advise you at 18 months if things don't change, but I have a feeling he'll be talking by then!

Re: DS will be 14 months on Saturday and...
My DS is 18 months and does not say any words except mama or dada every once in a while. We just had his 18 month check up and my Dr said to wait another couple of months, and if he is still not talking we will then discuss evaluation. She said that 18 months is too early for an evaluation. I am not worried because DS understands everything I ask him or tell him, it just hasn't clicked yet with the talking.

I've heard the same thing. One of my friends that had her son in speech therapy said that boys tend to talk later on.

DS understands some things too. Like what he does with the books for example. Whenever I yell out "no" for when he's doing something he's not supposed to be doing he stops dead in his tracks and just stares at me. Sure a few minutes he'll do it again but he does stop immediately when I say "no" Sometimes he stops and doesn't do it again.
What's important is that I encourage. Whenever he does something no matter how big or small it is I always clap my hands and cheer out "yayyy" It makes him happy and makes him repeat what he was doing. Then he claps his hands with us and makes a sound that sounds like he's saying "yayyy". So I guess him understanding things is important as well...
