I have the Nikon d40 and love it. I don't think many people ever regret getting an SLR.

I have the Nikon D5000 and I love it. My suggestion would be to figure out what features you need. Unless you plan on really getting into photography a beginners model should be just fine. Most choose between Nikon and Cannon but there are definitely other great cameras out there. My husband shot freelance for years and he is a huge Pentax fan. Once you have narrowed it done to a few models, go and handle them at a camera store. In the end it may just come down to what feels more comfortable in your hands.
