Dumb question - what's a cesspool?

Since I grew up in Queens, I don't really know what a cesspool is. All I know is that its sewage related.

Does everyone on LI have one, or only certain towns?

A cesspool is where the waste water from your toilets and drains go (sometimes even your washing machine) Its a cement cast that has holes on the sides. The water and waste goes in, and the solid waste stays, where as the water leaks in to the ground. the waste will stay there and dissenagrate over time. Sometimes, you need to have the cesspool pumped because there is too much waste in there.

There are allot of places on LI that have cesspools and some that are hooked up to the sewer system...where the waste is brought and treated

I hope I explained that ok. Chat Icon

Most of nassau has sewers. Some parts of Sufffolk have cesspools. Let's just say that I would prefer to have sewers.

I grew up in Bellmore and had a cesspool until they all went to sewers..ours caved in and had to be pumped but by then we filled it in since the sewer lines were being placed.

I am in one of the few towns in Nassau that is not hooked up to sewers and I have cesspools. Yuck! I hate having to worry about them and they are expensive to replace.
