dumb question about cribs
Maybe there is a common sense answer to this question or maybe I am the only one who has ever wondered but why do cribs have bars? especially since you hear of babies arms and legs getting stuck in them and climbing out! do they sell cribs that do not have bars? i have not seen any anywhere!
thanks!

Re: dumb question about cribs
all cribs sold in the US meet the same safety standards. so whether it's a $100 crib or a $2000 crib, the bars HAVE to be a certain distance apart.

Thank you for posting and this is good to know but even so I still hear of babies still getting stuck ..even recently on this board I read about it happening.. the baby ended up being fine but very upset and his or her legs were very red from it.. from what I remember... just curious what purpose the bars have.

Can I ask what cribs would have if they did not have bars?

I guess more of a netting like a play pen? but it would have to be secure so baby cannot break it... the other option would be 4 solid walls but that is claustrophobic I guess..
I just read on other sites thoughts from moms who have babies who have gotten stuck that thought maybe the bars are for air circulation and so the baby can see the room. Maybe the bars should be even closer so arms and legs can't get stuck and bruised?
I am surprised I cannot find the history of cribs on google. there must be a real reason bars were used to begin with!? There is a reason for everything. To me, I am reminded of that story of the lady who cut the ends off the roast beef every time and the kid asked, "why" and she said "I don't know. That's how my mother did it" so they asked Grandma, "Why?" and she said "That is how my mother did it" and you go and ask Great Grandma and she says that her "pan was too small for the whole roast beef!"

Re: dumb question about cribs
The reason the cribs have bars is so babies can get oxygen to breathe. If there were solid walls around a crib the baby would not be able to get enough oxygen and maybe breath in carbon dioxide. The rebreathing of carbon dioxide has been said to play a role in the occurrence of SIDS.
I would think that netting would just not be sturdy for every day use.
