dumb question about school ages & do nursery schools let you join mid-year?
DS will be 3 in the beginning of 2013 so he's suppossed to go to nursery school in Sept, right? and then pre-k at 4 (4.5 for him though because of his b-day) I was actually hoping to enroll him at his 3rd b-day. Does anyone know if they allow enrollment mid-year or do you usually have to wait until Sept- he'll be 3.5 years old by then.

We had done mid year enrollment in a 2.5 yr old program for my DD. She had started in Jan.

In my son's nursery school they do allow it but only if they have available space so its worth checking out if you think he will be ready in january.

If he turns 3 in January he would do a 2 yr program now or in January when he turns 3. DD is 3 (may bday) and has tons of Dec and Jan children in her class. Why wait until he turns 3. You can wait when DD#1 was that age she had 2 little girls join her 2 yr program in Jan that turned 3 in Dec and the month they joined. It goes by school year cut off not actual age.

oh ok, so you are saying maybe wait until Sept 2013 (at the start of the school year) to enroll him into nursery school when he will be 3.5 years old? I am a little confused because this school thing is new to me
So then he would be in pre-k when he is 4.5 years old & K when he is 5.5 years old?

A lot of nursery schools will start mid-year but public school system won't. My son also has a Jan birthday and he start his pre-K year when he's 4.5 and start Kindergarten at 5.5.

got it! I guess I could possibly (depending on nursery school's rules) enroll ds in nursery from the start of the new year when he turns 3 years old to 4.5 years old, when he will start pre-k.

This. Mid year for 3 makes no diff, go for it. Our cut off here is Sept 1 so AJ barely makes the cut. She'll be a young 5 next year for kindergarten.
yep.. I said Kindergarten (still learning how that sounds in my mind )

Yes - he just misses the cutoff - what is it by you Dec 1? So all children who were born after Dec 1st - would be the oldest each year in their class (aside from those whose parents hold them back). So if your birthday is Dec 2nd then yes you would be almost 4 when you go into a 3 year program, almost 5 when you go into the 4's program and almost 6 when you start Kindergarten. Conversely - this is why some people feel that they want to hold back their Nov, Oct, and Sept kids - because they will be turning 6 when school starts rather than being the youngest and still 4 when they start Kindergarten. You could go ahead and enroll him now in a 2 year program (if you can find space) now rather than waiting until he turns 3. I think it might be easier to start in the fall then waiting until the middle of the school year. But the preschools follow the public school rules/calendar.

Most nurssery schools have open admissions all year long but good luck finding a spot mid year.
